No truth to the lights rumor at Dover International Speedway

DOVER, Del. -- After another successful race weekend at Dover International Speedway, the rumor mill has again begun to turn.

The construction of new light towers in the infield of Dover Downs Raceway, the harness racing track owned and operated by Dover Downs Gaming & Entertainment, Inc., have led some to believe that lights are being added to motorsports events at the one-mile concrete oval.

Dover International Speedway has no plans to add lights in 2006.

"There is no truth to the rumor that lights will be added in 2006 at Dover International Speedway," said Denis McGlynn, CEO and president of Dover Motorsports, Inc.

The new harness track lights are currently being erected in 26 locations around the property to replace the original lights which were installed when the track opened in 1969.

The installation of the lights will be completed at Dover Downs Raceway in time for the opening of the 2005-2006 season on Oct. 31, 2005.

NASCAR action returns to Dover International Speedway next year for two tripleheaders in 2006 on June 2-4 and Sept. 22-24. Tickets for the June 2-4 race weekend are now on sale, and can be obtained by calling 800-441-RACE or online at www.DoverSpeedway.com <http://www.DoverSpeedway.com>.

DUPONT HONORS RETURNING TROOPS WITH NASCAR EXPERIENCE
SIGNS ‘5 STAR’ STATEMENT OF SUPPORT WITH ESGR

DOVER, Del. (Sept. 20, 2005) - At this weekend’s upcoming race event at Dover International Speedway, DuPont will not only recognize soldiers recently returning from active duty, but will be recognized for the ongoing support of its employees who are called to duty through the National Guard and Reserve.

DuPont, headquartered in nearby Wilmington, recently awarded 12 members of the U.S. military, and a guest of their choice, seats on the DuPont Monster Bridge where they will watch the Dover 200 NASCAR Busch Series race on Sept. 24. For two weeks, listeners of Motor Racing Network affiliates, WDSD 92.9 FM (Dover, Del.), WXTU 92.5 FM (Philadelphia, Pa.), WFLS 93.3 FM (Fredericksburg, Va.) and WICO 97.5 FM (Salisbury, Md.) had the chance to nominate a returning soldier by calling in or visiting the respective radio stations’ Web site. The winners and their guests will also make a trip to the restricted garage area to meet Jeff Gordon, four-time NASCAR champion and driver of the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet.

Then on Sunday, a representative of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Committee will recognize DuPont for signing its ‘5- Star’ Statement of Support for the National Guard and Reserve. The statement publicly demonstrates DuPont’s support for its employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve. It also recognizes that DuPont has adopted polices and programs that are “Above and Beyond” what is required by the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA).

DuPont offers support with pay differential to offset the loss of wages and an extension of health care benefits which complements coverage provided by the military when their employees are mobilized. It also sends the clear message to its National Guard and Reserve employees that while they are serving their country they do not have to worry about their civilian jobs.

The DuPont Monster Bridge, built in 2004, is a glass-enclosed seating structure that suspends 56 people in air-conditioned comfort 29 feet above the Dover International Speedway. The bridge is made possible by more than one dozen DuPont products and innovative building materials including DuPont™ Tyvek® CommericalWrap® and DuPont™ SentryGlas Plus® ionoplast interlayer, a material that allows the glass to sustain a lug nut being fired at it at 200 mph without shattering.

DuPont is a science company. Founded in 1802, DuPont puts science to work by creating sustainable solutions essential to a better, safer, healthier life for people everywhere. Operating in more than 70 countries, DuPont offers a wide range of innovative products and services for markets including agriculture, nutrition, electronics, communications, safety and protection, home and construction, transportation and apparel.

GREG BIFFLE TO SIGN #16 SEAT IN THE DUPONT MONSTER BRIDGE

NASCAR NEXTEL Cup driver Greg Biffle will visit the Dupont Monster Bridge at Dover International Speedway on Friday, Sept. 23, 2005 at 9:45 a.m. to sign the #16 seat. Biffle will sign this seat as part of the new Dover tradition, with race winners of the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup events at the Speedway being invited to sign their respective seat in the special structure. Ryan Newman, winner of the MBNA America 400 race in Sept. 2004, signed the #12 seat during the most recent June 2005 race weekend in Dover.

The DuPont Monster Bridge is a glass-enclosed seating structure that extends over the track in turn 3 at Dover International Speedway. The DuPont Monster Bridge suspends racing fans 29 feet above the fast-paced NASCAR action below, offering an unprecedented view of the race. Many sports put fans on the sideline, close to the action - but no other seat in sports allows them to stare into competitors' eyes as they roar towards them and pass beneath their feet.

The one-of-a-kind seating venue's fifty-six custom-built, theater-style seats are embroidered with the "Monster Mile" logo and were manufactured by American Seating in Grand Rapids, Mich. Each seat provides audio access to NASCAR race coverage on television and radio, along with access to the major drivers' race team communications. Flat-screen televisions, a climate-controlled interior, wall-to-wall carpet and a full-service refreshment bar add to the DuPont Monster Bridge experience.

With the exception of two races he missed in 1978, Rudd has started every NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race in Dover since the Mason-Dixon 500 on May 16, 1976.

In 55 Dover starts, Rudd has compiled 4 poles, 4 wins, 26 top-10s, 14 top-5s, and $1.9 million in winnings.

NASCAR CHARITY FUN WALK, SATURDAY, SEPT. 24 AT 5 P.M.

Press Release

NASCAR TO GO "ON TRACK FOR CHARITY" BENEFITING VICTORY JUNCTION GANG CAMP, SPEEDWAY CHILDREN'S CHARITIES AND TWO DELAWARE CHARITIES

The Tyson Fun Walk event is September 24 at Dover International Speedway

Charlotte, N.C. (September 19, 2005) -  The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) announced today the Tyson Fun Walk NASCAR On Track for Charity fundraising event which is set for Saturday, Sept. 24 at 5 p.m. at Dover International Speedway. NASCAR fans participating in the event will have the opportunity to walk on the racetrack to get an exclusive look at the "Monster Mile," while contributing to the benefit of thousands of children.

Online pre-registration fee for the Tyson Fun Walk is $20 until Sept. 22 and $25 at the track; children under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult and can participate for free. All registered participants will receive an event T-shirt. Fans can register online at www.speedwaycharities.org  or by calling (704) 455-4396. Registration will also be held at the Tyson Fun Walk Tent located on Plaza Drive across from Gate 4 at Dover International Speedway. The Tyson Fun Walk will begin at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24.

Together with Tyson, the National Title Sponsor of NASCAR "On Track for Charity," NASCAR is continuing to pledge its support for the Victory Junction Gang Camp and Speedway Children's Charities. The Victory Junction Gang camp, a non-profit organization founded by Kyle and Pattie Petty in honor of their late son Adam, provides extraordinary, race-themed, camp experiences to children with life-threatening illnesses. Speedway Children's Charities, also a non-profit organization, aids children in need of medical, educational or social services by supporting hundreds of non-profit charities that provide those services effectively.

"As a proud partner of the motorsports community, we're thrilled to be part of the Tyson Fun Walk at Dover International Speedway," said Mark Rossi, vice president of sales and marketing of Dover Motorsports, Inc.  "And we couldn't be happier that half of the funds raised during the walk will also go to benefit two worthy Delaware causes - the Boys and Girls Club of Kent County, Del. and the Mom's House."

In addition to Tyson, Goody's will continue to partner with NASCAR for the event, serving as National Associate Sponsor. SHANNON BROWN TO SING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM FOR MBNA RACEPOINTS 400

The national anthem on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005 for the MBNA RacePoints 400 will be sung by Warner Bros. recording artist Shannon Brown.

Shannon Brown biography

Shannon Brown is the product of a small town in Iowa and of a childhood filled with the music floating out of the nightclubs and restaurants her parents owned. She quickly graduated from the hairbrush-microphone stage and by her late teens, she was taking the stage at the family club. Although she could sing anything, her tastes and her show were rooted firmly in country music. Her country delivery was infused with a soulfulness born of hours of listening to Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles.

After several years of touring the Midwest with her father running the soundboard and her mom running lights, Shannon decided to make the move to Music City USA. She paid the bills singing songwriters' demo sessions and managed to maintain her Midwestern touring schedule of 160 dates a year. Her vocal stylings and industrious approach did not go unnoticed. She landed a major label record deal, made a record, and dealt with the ups and downs of corporate restructuring and the fickle nature of the music business.

Having weathered that storm, she signed a new deal with Warner Bros. Records. Her new record is a powerful statement of self that has provided her with the opportunity to record songs that reflect who she is. Along with producer and label-mate John Rich, she has created a collection of songs that is more about a return to her All-American roots than fulfilling a corporate image. She co-wrote most of the songs on the album, including the first single "Corn Fed." Aolmusic.com debuted her new web series, This Is Shannon Brown, on July 29. Produced by her video producer husband Shaun Silva, the series delivers a behind-the-scenes look at Shannon's journey up to this point.

A recollection from early in her performing career formed the foundation on which Shannon Brown has built her career. "The first concert I played with a full band was when I opened for Marty Stuart. A couple of years later I went to see him in concert and after the show we were visiting...he pulled me aside and said, 'From the first time I met you, I saw the fire in your eyes, and I knew you had what it takes to make it. Don't ever give up.'"

It's clear that the country legend's advice was heeded. Warner Bros. is proud to introduce the voice and personality of Shannon Brown.

DuPont Monster Bridge receives patent protection

DOVER, Del. -- The DuPont Monster Bridge at Dover International Speedway has been granted patent protection by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (U.S. Patent No. 6,920,658). The patent has been issued for the DuPont Monster Bridge specifically as a "racetrack bridge" that spans the width of the track at Dover International Speedway, providing spectators with a comfortable, unobstructed view of events on the track.

"When we conceived the bridge, we knew it was a novel idea that had never before been attempted. We were optimistic that it could be a one-of-a-kind addition to the motorsports industry. Now that it has come to fruition and it has been a terrific success for our sponsors, our fans and our facility - it is fitting that we now have the protection of the U.S. Patent Office," said Jerry Miraglia, executive vice president of Dover Motorsports, Inc. "'The most exciting seat in motorsports' will only exist at the Monster Mile, unless we license the concept to other facilities."

The DuPont Monster Bridge is a glass-enclosed seating structure that extends over the track at Dover International Speedway, offering an unprecedented view of NASCAR racing action below. The seating venue's fifty-six custom-built, theater-style seats are embroidered with the "Monster Mile" logo, and each seat provides audio access to NASCAR race coverage on television and radio, along with access to race team communications. Flat-screen televisions, a climate-controlled interior, wall-to-wall carpet and a full-service refreshment bar add to the DuPont Monster Bridge experience. Many sports put fans on the sideline, close to the action - but no other seat in sports allows them to stare into competitors' eyes as they roar towards them and pass beneath their feet. The innovation was first introduced for the June 4-6, 2004 NASCAR race weekend at Dover International Speedway.

In 2004, DuPont signed a three-year agreement to be the title and innovative building products sponsor of the DuPont Monster Bridge at Dover International Speedway. The 140,000-seat concrete superspeedway hosts two NASCAR tripleheader race weekends each year.

A new tradition in the DuPont Monster Bridge includes the winner of the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race making an appearance in the structure to sign their respective seats. To date, the #6 seat of Mark Martin is autographed, along with the #12 seat of Ryan Newman. Jeff Gordon, a four-time winner at the Monster Mile and driver of the DuPont-sponsored Chevrolet, has signed the #24 seat. Greg Biffle will sign the #16 seat in the Fall, as the winner of the June 5, 2005 MBNA RacePoints 400.

Celebrity visitors to the DuPont Monster Bridge have included NASCAR CEO Brian France; Hendrick Motorsports CEO Rick Hendrick; NASCAR President Mike Helton; chef Mario Batali; Miss America 2005 Deidre Downs; Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb; and NASCAR NEXTEL Cup drivers Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin, Dale Jarrett, Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman.

The DuPont Monster Bridge is possible thanks to such innovative building materials as DuPont(tm) SentryGlas® Plus ionoplast interlayer, which helps to impart strength and impact-resistance to the structure's front and rear glass walls. The material qualified for this demanding application by successfully passing lab tests during which lug nuts were fired at it at 200 mph. SentryGlas® Plus is one of more than a dozen DuPont products and technologies showcased in the DuPont Monster Bridge. Others include flooring materials, wire and cable insulation, weatherization systems, refrigerants, coatings and solid surface materials.

In addition to DuPont, other partners have enjoyed this unique opportunity to promote their products and services while rewarding strategic partners, contest winners and race fans. Dover International Speedway's current DuPont Monster Bridge partners include Nextel, Diageo, Tylenol and Shore Stop convenience stores. Each race weekend, through various track promotions and contests, Dover also randomly selects race fans from its fan base to experience the bridge. The fan response to the DuPont Monster Bridge experience has been exceptional.

Walk planned for Wednesday, June 15 to encourage physical fitness

DOVER, Del. -- A fitness walk at Dover International Speedway is planned for Wednesday, June 15, 2005 as part of the Lt. Governor's Challenge. The walk will begin at 12 p.m., and will allow participants to walk the one-mile concrete superspeedway at lunchtime. The fitness walk is free and open to the public.

Members of the media are welcome to attend. This is the second year Dover International Speedway has hosted the Lt. Governor's Challenge. Lt. Governor Carney and participants will be available for comment. Log books and other information on the Lt. Governor's Challenge will also be available.

The Challenge, which Carney started three years ago, has had almost 20,000 people sign up and has many group participants, including corporate, faith-based and senior organizations. The Challenge was created to help make Delawareans aware that being more physically active doesn't mean countless hours at the gym. "The Challenge isn't about running a marathon or becoming a power lifter," Carney said. "It's about having a good time with family and friends. I can't think of a better place to get some physical activity while having fun than at a state landmark like Dover International Speedway."

Participants in the Lt. Governor's Challenge accumulate points by completing any of a wide variety of daily activities, and use an official Challenge logbook to track their progress. After three months, participants are awarded gold, silver or bronze medals based on the number of points they earned. For more information on the Lt. Governor's Challenge, call (302) 577-8787 or (302) 744-4333.

"Dover International Speedway is pleased to host such an important initiative here on the property," said Denis McGlynn, CEO and president of Dover Motorsports, Inc. "Anything we can do to encourage a healthy lifestyle is a positive, and hopefully many Delawareans will come out and walk the Monster Mile."

On June 15, guests can access the track by entering the main entrance off of Route 13, and turning right in front of the Dover Downs Hotel. Follow the access road around the outside of the track to Gate 1, where parking will be available.

With the June 3-5, 2005 race weekend just completed, Dover International Speedway is now gearing up for the Sept. 23-25 NASCAR race weekend. All eyes will again be on the Monster Mile, as the Sunday, Sept. 25 race is the second of the final ten races of the season and part of the "Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup."                    Dover International Speedway's initiative to seize counterfeit merchandise proves very successful

DOVER, Del. -- An undercover initiative to stop the sale of counterfeit merchandise at Dover International Speedway has proven very successful.

Dover International Speedway, in conjunction with the FBI, Dover Police Department and Delaware State Police, conducted an undercover sting to prevent counterfeit merchandise from being sold on the property on race weekends. Law enforcement officials, disguised as race fans, canvassed the parking lots at Dover International Speedway throughout race weekend.

Officers focused on locating main distribution points of counterfeit merchandise early in the weekend, and began apprehending the major conspirators on Saturday. Historically, as race weekends progress, the appearance of unlicensed merchandise becomes more visible. This year, by the start of the Sunday, June 5 race at Dover International Speedway, illegal vendors were almost nonexistent.

Over the course of the weekend, eight individuals, identified as illegal vendors, were removed from track property, detained and questioned. All counterfeit merchandise in their possession was seized.

The FBI played a crucial role in the overall success of the initiative. Several months of planning and coordination efforts with state and local law enforcement were the keys to the program's smooth and efficient operation.

"Through collaboration with Dover International Speedway, the FBI, Delaware State Police and the Dover Police Dept., we were able to significantly reduce the sale of counterfeit merchandise," said Major Ray Taraila, Deputy Chief of Dover Police Dept. "We have made a real impact on the illegal sale of unlicensed merchandise in Dover, and hopefully made a positive impact on legitimate, law abiding businesses and vendors."

Nextel Communications also played a critical role in the initiative by providing wireless phones to the undercover officers. Rapid and reliable communication during the operation was essential. Through the donation of 30 i355 handsets that feature Nextel's newest walkie-talkie feature, Group ConnectSM, it allowed officials to instantly broadcast communications to the entire unit.

Busch rebounds from afternoon wreck, wins Craftsman Truck Series MBNA RacePoints 200

June 4, 2005

The second part of Kyle Busch’s Saturday ended in a much better fashion than the first part did.

Just a few hours after being involved in a three-car wreck that took him out of the Busch Series version of the MBNA RacePoints 200, Busch won the Craftsman Truck Series version of the race at Dover International Speedway on Saturday evening, holding off Tony Stewart by seven-tenths of a second.

Busch has now won two consecutive Craftsman Truck Series races, which have been the only two races he has entered this year.  This week in Dover, Busch is entered in all three events.

For much of the afternoon, Ron Hornaday, Jr. looked like he was going to drive away with an easy victory.  Hornaday took the lead on lap 14 and was ahead for the next 134 laps, save one lap where the field shuffled during pit stops.  He was routinely opening up leads of four seconds and greater on the field with little difficulty.

But on lap 148, with the yellow flag out for track debris, Hornaday suffered an unfortunate misstep in the pits.  When the left rear tire was changed, one of the lugnuts did not thread properly and fell to the ground.  Hornaday took off with only four lugnuts, and had to come back in to have the problem resolved.  As a result, he fell to 14th and had to settle for a fourth-place finish.

“We were an absolute rocket ship,” Hornaday said.  “This should have been our race, but we’ll take where we finished.  We still had a great day.  We had a bad stop, but you win and lose as a team, so there is no one to blame.”

David Reutimann took the lead from Hornaday and held it for 33 laps, but Busch ran him down with 18 laps remaining, catching him on a restart from another caution period, and was able to hold the lead through a series of cautions and restarts.

“Reutimann was really strong,” Busch said.    “I was surprised when he was able to get out in front there and kind of take off a little bit, and I had to go chase him down.  We had a caution come out when I was about halfway to catching him.  I couldn’t get him without it being a restart. I couldn’t go outside and get alongside him.  As soon as that caution came out, I knew I had a shot.”

All told, there were a total of 11 cautions on the day for 49 laps, the most cautions ever displayed in a truck race at Dover.  The day started with a wreck the first lap that involved five trucks, and ended with four accidents in the final 32 laps.

Busch is hoping to take the experience of 400 miles on the Dover track today into Sunday’s MBNA RacePoints 400 Nextel Cup race.

“Dover is a tough track, so just being able to get the extra experience here is good,” he said.  “I’m young enough that my body can take [three races], so it’s pretty cool to have a shot to run all three.  Probably had a shot to win all three.  But to be able to come out here today, hopefully it gives me enough advance information for tomorrow’s Cup race.  I think it taught me enough about what I need to know about my race car so we can adjust on it tomorrow.”

Stewart settled for the second-place finish, followed by Terry Cook, Hornaday and Reutimann.

Truex makes it two in a row at Dover!

June 4, 2005

As the closest NASCAR track to his hometown of Mayetta, NJ, Dover International Speedway is always a homecoming for Martin Truex, Jr.  On Saturday, it certainly seemed like home, sweet home.

Truex led 70 of 200 laps en route to a win in the MBNA RacePoints 200 at the Monster Mile, giving him his second consecutive Dover win.  Truex also won the Stacker 2 Hundred Busch series race at Dover last September.

Starting the race from the fifth position, Truex took his time before making a move for the lead.  He lingered anywhere from second to seventh through the first 100 laps before jumping out in front at lap 98, only to relinquish the lead two laps later on a caution for debris.  Truex then took the lead again at lap 130 and held it for eight laps, but gave it up again when the caution came out for a wreck at lap 138.

But Truex didn’t wait long to jump out in front again after the green flag came out at lap 141.  He jumped in front to stay at lap 143, sneaking by points leader Carl Edwards.

“We just stayed patient, worked on the car, made good adjustments, and got it better all day long,” Truex said.  “I just tried to be patient and take my time getting to the front.  Even early on, I just tried to be real patient, and at the end we got the car really good and I was able to run it hard.”

Truex got his third win of the season and his fifth top-five finish.  The win bumped him up one spot to third in the NASCAR Busch Series standings, 120 points behind leader Edwards and 46 points behind second-place Reed Sorenson.  Sorenson finished second in the race, while Jamie McMurray finished third. Edwards, who started from the pole, ran consistently in the top 10 all day until developing an engine problem with just over 10 laps remaining.  He finished 31st.

Kevin Harvick, who started from the second position, took the lead after the first lap and held it for 57 miles.  He retook the advantage at lap 101 and continued to lead until lap 129.  But Harvick got caught up in a wreck at lap 147 on the frontstretch with Kyle Busch and Randy LaJoie, and was never a factor through the rest of the race.

The wreck was one of eight accidents on the day that involved a total of 13 cars.  With the addition of a ninth caution for debris, the race was under the yellow flag for 7 laps.

Being at home may have been a bit of a benefit for Truex.

“Anytime you come home it’s a good feeling,” he said.  “I went back to my old hometown this week for a couple days, and just got see all my old friends and hang out with them and catch up on old times, and just chill out.  Then one of my buddies came down with me and is staying with me, and brought some seafood from home.  It’s just was what we used to do.  I don’t know if it had anything to do with [the win] or not, but it sure was some good food.

“It was just good to see everybody, spend the night at my parents house and kind of do the things we used to do.  It’s just good to get home and spend some time there with my parents and little brother and see all my old buddies again.”

Truex, the defending Busch Series champion, feels his team has what it takes to repeat after the win.

“We’ve got as good a shot as anybody,” he said.  “Our race team is really strong – it’s stronger than last year, I feel.  We’ve got some really strong cars right now, and everything’s going well.  Communication is better than ever.  We just had some bad races throughout the year.  If I could have done a few things different or we have a couple less flat tires, we could be the points leader right now.  It’s not a matter of if we can do it or anything like that, it’s a matter of when we just put it all together like we did last year.  I feel like we’re on the right track to doing that.”

Rainy Friday at Dover International Speedway – Truck race postponed and starting lineups

June 3, 2005

The MBNA RacePoints 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series has been postponed. The schedule for Saturday, June 4, 2005 includes the Craftsman Truck and Busch Series races.

Normally the most important piece of equipment in NASCAR is something involved with the car – an engine part, good suspension or tires. But on Friday at Dover International Speedway, tarps were the item of focus.

The soundtrack of a steady rainfall replaced the roars of racing engines and the echo of the public address system on this day. Tarps hung off the roof of the open-sided garage, where the cars sat silent, many blanketed by their own custom covers. Other than the clang of a tool or the whir of an air gun, the normally loud process of fine-tuning was replaced by the quiet chatter of crew members.

Such is the nature of a rainy day at a NASCAR event. Crews busied about setting up their cars and putting them through inspection, while Goodyear techs worked on getting the tires ready for the weekend. But other than those things, there wasn’t much activity going on as the day went by. But some found it not to be a total loss.

“It’s not a wasted day,” said Ryan Newman. “I caught up on a little bit of sleep this morning. I know [Matt] Kenseth will be over at the [Dover Downs Slots] casino. The guys on the crew are probably inside [the trailer] playing poker because they have to be here. I’ll just relax a little bit.”
