Post Race Pit Notes From World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘The Bayou Battle’!!!!
NORMAN, Oklahoma – 3/22/06
Massive crowds, fund raisers and several other items of interest from the World of Outlaws Late Model Series inaugural appearance in the state of Louisiana last week-end highlight the pit notes of ‘The Bayou Battle’ presented by RaceCoaches.com and O’Reilly Auto Parts. The match-up between the WoO Late Model Series and SUPR Late Model Series drivers and race teams unfolded Friday, March 17 at Baton Rouge Raceway in Baker (Baton Rouge), La. with Clint ‘Cat Daddy’ Smith of Senoia, Ga. claiming his second World of Outlaws Late Model Series victory of the season. Round 2 of ‘The Bayou Battle’ scheduled Saturday, March 18 at Fast Trax Motorplex in Chatham (Monroe), Louisiana was rained out and may be rescheduled for a later date.
B.R.R. NOTES
ANY ROOM AT THE INN?: They kept coming and they kept coming. It started in the late afternoon and didn’t stop until the parking staff had filled every available parking spot. A standing room only crowd swelled Baton Rouge Raceway for the opening round of ‘The Bayou Battle’ presented by RaceCoaches.com and O’Reilly Auto Parts. An endless stream of anxious race fans descended on the facility the likes of which had not been seen at Baton Rouge Raceway.
With the first race of the evening taking the track B.R.R. Race Director and SUPR Late Model Series Race Director Greg Holmes exclaimed, “I’ve never seen a crowd like this here. The sheriff’s are parking cars where we’ve never parked them before. This is unreal!”
OPENING WALLETS AND HEARTS: The SRO crowd at Baton Rouge Raceway helped the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund in a substantial way. With $1.00 of every general admission ticket sold at B.R.R. donated to the Relief Fund a check of $1,072.00 was presented to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
Amy Brassett of the National American Red Cross was on hand at Baton Rouge Raceway to enjoy her first experience of dirt track racing. And, to thank the crowd for the generosity shown to those that are still devastated from Hurricane Katrina. Though months have passed thousands of people are still in dire need throughout the affected areas of the Gulf Coast especially in Louisiana according to Ms. Brassett.
“In so many parts of Louisiana absolutely no help has been there since the hurricane. The disaster is so large that in some community’s there are cars that have been sitting there since the flood and are barricading the roads to these community’s. The National Guard is keeping people out of some community’s. In some places there still is no electricity, no water or no anything. The devastation is so huge and affects such a large area that it’s not going to be a quick fix at all.”
Ms. Brassett explained that money is the most important item that can be donated to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
“Money helps out more than anything. People should remember that when they donate goods and things like that it may not be the right goods that are needed for our clients. Money allows us to get the right goods and services to the people affected by this disaster. Money helps those people get started over again.”
Donations are still greatly needed according to Ms. Brassett who urged people wishing to make money donations to do so.
“Absolutely people can still make money donations to the Disaster Relief Fund. They may contact their local American Red Cross chapter or log on to the National American Red Cross website. That way people can see exactly where their donations are going. Ninety percent of the people that work for the Red Cross are volunteers. We’re just trying to do the right thing and help people here.”

‘CAT DADDY’ ON THE PROWL: Clint Smith has been on a tear recently. With two victories in the first four races of the World of Outlaws Late Model Series and another handful of non-WoO wins, ‘Cat Daddy’ is pumped about his early season success but laments not qualifying for the Feb. 16 event at Volusia Speedway Park.
“We’re tickled to death the way the season has started for us”, said the driver of the JP Drilling/CSR Aluminum/Turkey Creek Snacks No. 44 Smith-Passmore Racing GRT Race Cars/RaceTek Engines Pontiac GTO. “We had that one flaw in Florida and missed that show but the next day we broke a driveshaft in hot laps and would’ve finished last anyway. It really wasn’t that big of a points loss as much as it was to miss qualifying for a World of Outlaws show. The first ever. To come back and win three since then, one World of Outlaws and two title shows, we’re happy. To come down here where they’ve had so much hurricane damage and to win in front of all the people that’s real satisfying to do that.”
With passing at a premium Smith was asked his strategy of retaking the lead from Chub Frank after Smith led the first two circuits of the race.
“When I got Chub I think he thought the top was staying better than what it was. When I got to him I wanted to pass him quick. So, whenever I caught him I tried to make the pass rather than just show him the front end of my car. We ran side by side for a few laps making a pretty good show but the bottom just came around for me.”
With heavy lapped traffic in front of Smith until a lap 30 caution cleared the way ‘Cat Daddy’ said the key was waiting for them.
“Lapped traffic did get a bit hairy. The top wasn’t good enough for me to worry about anyone going by me so I just waited for the lapped cars to mess up. Chris (second place finisher Chris Wall) ran me clean. He’s a big local hero and a super good racer coming up. Last couple of years especially. My congratulations to him for running second. I’m glad he didn’t kill us when those lapped cars crashed. He got into me a little bit but he was trying to stop too. It tried to turn up and give him some room but we banged a little bit but no harm, no foul.”
CHRIS WHO?: The name is Chris Wall. Outside of his Holden, La. home and the Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas area not very many race fans have heard the name Chris Wall. After his second place finish at Baton Rouge Raceway a lot more people now know the name. The young driver was the only SUPR Late Model Series regular to finish among the top twelve a feat that was not lost on him.
‘It’s an honor just to race with the World of Outlaws guys”, said Wall shortly after the finish of ‘The Bayou Battle’ at Baton Rouge Raceway. “We’ve had the opportunity to compete against the Outlaws guys a couple of times in the past year or so. To finish up front with these guys at our home town track feels pretty special. We’re tickled pink.”
When told of the comments by Clint Smith about his racing progress over the past two seasons Wall was humbled.
“That is pretty neat coming from a guy like Clint. That really means a lot to me.”
Known as ‘The Intimigator’ to his legion of fans Wall gets the moniker honestly. Wall along with his wife Missy own and operate C & M Gator Farm. They raise and harvest alligators for several markets including alligator meat markets and high-end alligator leather manufacturers. How they harvest their product is a combination of high-tech and intenstinal fortitude.
“Gators always mark their nesting areas by covering the eggs with reeds or whatever is handy”, said Missy Wall. “They cover the nest in a big circle pattern. We fly over our farm in an ultra-light and mark the nesting areas using GPS (global positioning satellite) technology. Then we climb in the airboat and using the GPS know exactly where the nesting areas are. We get out of the boat and one of us then has to distract the female away from the nest while the other runs in and gathers the eggs. Once we’re done harvesting the eggs are taken back to the farm and placed in incubators until they hatch. We raise ‘em up until they reach the size desired for the different markets we sell too.
“Not all the hatchlings go to market. By law we have to return fourteen percent of the hatched gators back to their area. We use the GPS to do that. When we first harvest the eggs it is marked down where the eggs were taken from. We return the ones we don’t use for market exactly back to where they were harvested.”
‘COCONUT’ CLOSING: Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Ga. has quietly put himself into contention for the 2006 World of Outlaws Late Model Series Championship. The second-generation hot shoe is only 8 points out of the Championship lead after nailing down another Top 5 finish with a third place showing at Baton Rouge Raceway. Driving to finishes of 7th, 3rd, 5th and 3rd in the first four events of the season ‘Coconut’ is very happy with the consistent finishes piloting the RSD Enterprises/SAE Parts No. 25 Ronnie Dobbins owned Rocket Chassis/Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
“We’re just tickled to death right now”, stated Clanton. “We just have to keep up our pace and finish in the top five and the points will take care of themselves. And, we’d like to get a couple of wins in there too.”
WoO –vs- SUPR: ‘The Bayou Battle’ presented by RaceCoaches.com and O’Reilly Auto Parts was billed as an “us versus them” promotion. The SUPR Late Model Series hometrack is Baton Rouge Raceway owned and operated by SUPR founder and owner Donald Watson. The 62-year-old “gentleman” (used respectively and in every true sense of the word) provides entertaining and competitive racing for the racer and fan alike with his rules package for the SUPR Late Model.
Utilizing a spec. engine and spec. tire along with a huge 12” rear spoiler the SUPR cars were thought by some to be totally non-competitive against the ‘open’ rules package of the WoO Late Model Series. But, that really wasn’t the case as a rules package giving the SUPR cars a 150lb. weight break from the standard 2300lb. rule evened the playing field.
Defending World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark. topped the field in time trials with his quick pass of 15.52 seconds driving the J&J Steel/Banner Valley Hauling/McCarthy’s One Hour Heating and Air No. 21 Billy Moyer Racing C.J. Rayburn Race Cars/Pro Power Racing Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
The rules package in place for the event saw World of Outlaws drivers claim the first four spots in time trials before Wall’s lap gave the SUPR contingent a top five. Marlon Wild of Springfield, La. timed eighth quick to give SUPR drivers two spots in the Top Ten. A total of nine SUPR drivers timed in the Top 20 giving them nearly half of the top qualifiers. A scant .46 seconds was the seperation between Moyer’s quick time and 20th in time trials.
Moyer was the only WoO regular that had ever seen B.R.R. before Friday’s event.
“I think the last time I was here was probably 15 or so years ago”, said Moyer. “This place now is not what I remembered. Guess that means I’m getting old”, chuckled the 48-year-old veteran.
FROM HERE TO THERE: To say that the start of the campaign for 2006 World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Rookie of the Year’ contender Eric Jacobsen of Santa Cruz, Ca. has been smooth is about as far from the truth as one could get. Fail to qualify for the opening round at Golden Isles Speedway in Georgia; make the field for the first night of WoO action at Volusia Speedway Park and then only make it 12 laps in the 50-lapper before hooking a rut flipping end for end three times and then fail to qualify for the WoO finale in Florida. Couldn’t get much worse, right?
It almost did.
With his Well Pict Berries/Soil Fume Inc./VP Racing Fuels No. 5 Eric Jacobsen Rocket Chassis/Pro Power Racing Pontiac Grand Prix based at the Rocket Chassis shop Jacobsen is a frequent flyer. Handling his business, Soil Fume Inc., in California keeps Jacobsen away from his car which is maintained in West Virginia by a hired crew. Come race time though Jacobsen hops a plane and fly’s to where ever it is the World of Outlaws are racing. The same plan was in order for ‘The Bayou Battle’ but we all know what they say about plans.
A major error on Jacobsen’s flight plans almost made him a no show at Baton Rouge Raceway. With the second flight of cars taking the track for warm-ups Jacobsen came sprinting through the pits on the way to his car. Jacobsen’s crew had drawn a high number for qualifying putting him in the fourth and final flight of cars for warm-ups. Just enough time to slip into his driving uniform and slide into the seat and enough time to tell the story.
“When I got the airport in San Francisco this morning I was told they had me on the return flight but not on the departing flight to get here” said Jacobsen. “I couldn’t believe it. I don’t know who screwed things up but it doesn’t matter now. I’m here. The airline I was dealing with had nothing to get me here on time. So, I literally ran to each airlines counter trying to get a flight. I finally got one that took me to Atlanta and then to New Orleans. I got to Atlanta and the flight to New Orleans was delayed. Once I got to New Orleans I grabbed a rental car and drove up here. The traffic was terrible but at least I’m here.”
Jacobsen slapped the turn four wall during his heat race causing enough damage to drop him from the qualifier. Knowing a World of Outlaw provisional starting spot for the main event awaited ‘The Earth Shaker’ ran the ‘B’ Main as a test session after amking repairs from the heat race damage. Jacobsen finished all 50 laps of ‘The Bayou Battle’ with a 23rd place finish.
FAST TRAX NOTES: The only note is four letters. R-A-I-N. Forecasted rain and thunderstorms arrived at 5:00a.m. CST Saturday forcing the cancellation of Round 2 of ‘The Bayou Battle’ presented by RaceCoaches.com and O’Reilly Auto Parts at Fast Trax Motorplex in Chatham, La. The event was called at 10:00a.m. when it was apparent there would be no let up in the rain which was forecasted not to end until late Monday.
The event may be rescheduled at a later date.

SPEED’s coverage of the World of Outlaws Late Model Series begins July 2 with coverage of the February 16 ‘Daytona Dodge-Chrysler/MOPAR Speed Shop/Valvoline 50’ held at Volusia Speedway Park. Three more WoO Late Model Series events will be broadcast in July followed by two SPEED broadcasts in August, September and October. Four broadcasts are on the November schedule before the SPEED finale for the World of Outlaws Late Model Series airs December 3.
“We are looking forward to having the World of Outlaws Late Model Series on SPEED again this year,” said Terri Metzger, DIRT MotorSports Sr. VP Media/Broadcast Communications. “Last year’s race for the championship came down to the final feature event and this year with a more consistent time slot on SPEED it will be even easier for fans to follow all the action this season.
“As with last year the programs will feature in-depth driver profiles, exciting in-car camera footage and intense racing competition from all over the United States. The 2006 coverage of the World of Outlaws Late Models on SPEED is a great opportunity for teams and sponsors to reach dirt track fans across the country as the best late model drivers on tour battle for more than $500,000 in point funds.”
The World of Outlaws Late Model Series national touring drivers include 2005 Series Champion Billy Moyer, 2005 Series Runner-Up and 2006 Volusia Speedway Park ‘Winternationals’ feature winner Steve Francis and 2004 Series ‘Rookie of the Year’ Tim McCreadie. ‘Cat Daddy’ Grabs World of Outlaws Late Model Series Round 1 Of ‘The Bayou Battle”!!!
BAKER (BATON ROUGE), Louisiana - 3-17-06
Clint Smith of Senoia, Georgia captured his second World of Outlaws Late Model Series sanctioned main event of the season Friday grabbing Round 1 of ‘The Bayou Battle’ presented by RaceCoaches.com and O’Reilly Auto Parts at Baton Rouge Raceway in Baker (Baton Rouge), Lousiana. Starting from the pole aboard the JP Drilling/CSR Aluminum/Turkey Creek Snacks No. 44 Smith-Passmore Racing GRT Race Cars/RaceTek Engines Pontiac GTO ‘Cat Daddy’ led the first two laps of the $10,000 to win affair before losing the lead to Chub Frank on lap 3. Smith stayed right with Frank regaining the lead on lap 6 then held off Chris Wall by .238 seconds for the victory. Shane Clanton rode home third with Chub Frank fourth and Dale McDowell fifth. Completing the top ten finishers were Steve Francis in sixth followed by Billy Moyer, Tim McCreadie, Rick Eckert and Darrell Lanigan.
“We’re tickled to death to get this win tonight”, said Smith. “We had big problems during qualifying where we almost broke the engine. We only took that one lap and came in and fixed it. That didn’t get us a front row spot for the heat race and we had to come from behind. That move we made in the heat race to get the lead, that move there was what won the race for us tonight. When you get out front here you can sorta’ control your own destiny. If we hadn’t won that heat race I don’t know if we’d be talking right now.”
The event was co-sanctioned by the SUPR Late Model Series and Wall was the only SUPR driver to finish in the top twelve. The Holden, Louisiana driver took the runner-up spot on lap 11 from Frank and actually got under Smith a few times but couldn’t find enough room to pass for the lead. Wall, driving the C&M Gator Farms/Gator Trax Boats No. 71 Wall Racing MasterSbilt Race Cars/Wall 2 Wall Engines Chevrolet Monte Carlo, was ecstatic with his runner-up finish.
“It’s just an honor to run with the World of Outlaws guys”, said Wall. “We’ve had the opportunity to run with these guys a few times the past year or so and to finish up front with these guys is pretty awesome. To run up front is special and finish second in a World of Outlaws race we’re just tickled pink.”
When asked if he thought he may have had a chance at pulling off the upset Wall replied, “Well I don’t know. I mean the track started to get one groove and really didn’t lend itself to passing. If the groove I liked would’ve stayed there longer I really think we may have given Clint a run for the money. But, to run second with these guys is pretty special.”
Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Georgia drove the RSD Enterprises/SAE Parts No. 25 Ronnie Dobbins Enterprises Rocket Chassis/Custom Racing Engines Pontiac GTO to a third place finish continuing his string of solid finishes during the early part of the season. Clanton was satisified with the ‘show’ finish but felt he may have had a chance at the win before the track went away.
“I think we may have had a better car than Clint and Chris if the track would’ve stayed like it was during the early laps”, stated Clanton. “When a track rubbers up it’s hard to pass. I know the track crew worked their butts off trying to give us a good track and make a good race for us and the fans. But it’s hard to work with sand. There isn’t much you can do there.”
The SRO crowd on hand at Baton Rouge Raceway saw Smith get the jump on outside front row starter Clanton at the drop of the green flag. Frank motored past Clanton for the second spot as the field exited turn two on the opening lap. Not only did Clanton see Frank move past him on the opening circuit he also saw Billy Moyer and Wall motor past.
Smith lost the lead working lap 3 when Frank shot to the inside of Smith exiting turn two. Smith kept glued to Frank working him high and low before regaining the lead with 5 laps down. Wall moved past Moyer for third on lap 7 with Clanton shuffling Moyer back a spot the next lap. Moyer continued to backslide as McDowell took the fifth spot on the next go round.
With 10 laps down Smith carried a two car advantage on Frank with Wall putting heavy pressure on Frank as the leaders bore down on the back of the field. Using the traffic Wall slipped past Frank for the runner-up spot on lap 11 and two laps later Clanton worked his way to third.
The heavy traffic in front of the leaders kept things interesting. Wall tried to get under Smith but the veteran was up to the challenge. At the halfway mark Smith held a narrow lead on Wall with Clanton lurking ahead of Frank and McDowell. Francis was now sixth with Moyer seventh, McCreadie eighth, Eckert ninth and Lanigan tenth.
The traffic cleared for Smith and the leaders on lap 30 when a turn one three car tangle between Ronnie Adams, John Blankenship and Keith Craft got the yellow lights flashing. With a clear track ahead for the restart Smith powered away from Wall who now had his hands full with Clanton. Clanton made a move for the runner-up spot on lap 37 but Wall closed the door keeping Clanton at bay. The field again would be slowed at lap 46 when Phillip Cooper spun in turn three. The four lap dash to the finish was all Smith despite Wall’s efforts to catch the leader.
The $45,000 purse event attracted 41 drivers to the semi-banked ¼ mile speedway with Moyer earning time trial honors with a fast lap of 15.52 seconds. Moyer, Clanton, Frank and Smith garnered heat race wins while Garrett Durrett and Rob Litton took the ‘B’ Mains and Smith copped the dash.
