VIRGINIA MOTOR SPEEDWAY TO CROWN
CHAMPIONS THIS SATURDAY NIGHT
Jamaica, VA - Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway will return to action this
coming Saturday Night, September 30th as it hosts the WIGO / NAPA of Saluda
Championship Night. This is a rescheduled event from the September 16th rain
out. All five divisions will be in action and crowning champions for the 2006
season.
After having to wait it out for two weeks all five of the track’s weekly
divisions will finally get the chance to crown their champions. Going into the
big weekend four of the five divisions will go down to the last lap to decide
the championships. The only division that has already decided their Champion is
the Truckin Thunder Sportsman as Donnie Owens of North, VA holds a 136 point
advantage over 2003 Champion Daren Bolac of Moyock, NC. Bolac will have to have
a good run to hold on to second with everyone else in the top five having a shot
at taking over second.
In the Victory Lap Late Model division Jared Powell of Charlottesville, VA took
over the points lead in week five, but troubles during the last part of the
season have allowed Sommey Lacey of Clements, MD to close back within 42 points.
Powell however, has returned to his early season form with two wins in his last
two starts.
In the Budweiser Modified division Bret Hamilton of Powhatan, VA is trying to
win his third title in the last four years; he’s done a good job in staying on
top with eight division wins. Hamilton has led the points from week one but has
stretched the lead out to 58 points over the last five races. Brian Dobie of
Partlow, VA and defending Champion Page Harrison of Jetersville, VA have had a
spirited battle trying to keep pace with Hamilton, swapping second in the points
back and forth several times during the season.
In the Al’s Auto Parts Charger division Bob Terry of Fredericksburg, VA has been
looking up at point leader Davis Lipscombe of Mechanicsville, VA for much of the
year, giving up the lead to Lipscombe after the divisions third race in May.
Terry will get one more shot to erase his 41-point deficit when the division
returns to action this Saturday September 16th. Lipscombe, on the other hand,
has been on a hot streak with nine division wins thus far and in contention to
also take home the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship.
In the Dixie Chopper All American division Marty Coltrain of Richmond, VA hasn’t
won many battles during the course of the season but may just win the war as he
holds a 54 point advantage over Dustin Owens of North, VA. Owens has had the hot
hand all season with eight division wins. But, two DNF’s have hampered his
chances at winning the title.
Competitor gates will open at 3pm with spectator gates opening at 4pm. Divisions
scheduled to race on Friday: Divisions scheduled for Saturday: Victory Lap Late
Models (35 Laps); Truckin Thunder Sportsman (30 laps); Budweiser Modified (25
Laps); Al’s Auto Parts Chargers (25 Laps) and the Dixie Chopper All Americans
(15 Laps).
Admission price for Adults $10, Seniors and Military $8; Students 13 – 17 years
old $7, Children 7 – 12 years old $4 and Children 6 and under admitted free. The
speedway offers a $2 discount coupon on the Speedway’s Website, good on any
Adult, Senior and Military tickets only. Fans need to have a coupon for each
ticket purchased. The speedway also offers a “Family Pack” that includes two
adult admissions and two children 12 and under admissions for only $20.

ACTIVITIES AT VIRGINIA MOTOR SPEEDWAY
Jamaica, VA – A late afternoon rain shower has forced officials at Bill Sawyer’s
Virginia Motor Speedway to postpone WIGO / NAPA of Saluda Championship Night to
Saturday, September 30th. All five divisions will crown their champions on that
night.
Track staff worked feverously to get the track surface back in racing condition
after the heavy rain shower but after an hour of trying officials decided that
it was not going to come around in an appropriate amount of time to run the
night’s events.
“We tried to wait out the rains and then get the track run back in, but it was
just way to wet for us to do so. We have to think of the safety of our
competitors, they are our first priority,” commented track Owner Bill Sawyer.
Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway will return to action this coming Friday
and Saturday Night, September 22 – 23rd as it hosts the 37th Annual Fall Classic
presented by Thurston Spring Service. It’s back to two days of door slamming,
high octane, and fast family fun!
Sprint Cars and the Recycler (Junk) Cars will join the Victory Lap Late Models,
Truckin Thunder Sportsman, Budweiser Modifieds, Al’s Auto Parts Chargers and the
Dixie Chopper All Americans in the exciting two-day program. The Late Model,
Sportsman, Modified and Charger divisions will run hot lap qualifying, heats on
Friday and features on Saturday. The All Americans will run heats Friday and
their feature on Saturday.
Competitor gates both nights will open at 4pm with spectator gates opening at
5pm. Divisions scheduled to race on Friday: 305 Sprint Cars (30 Laps);
Qualifying and Heats for all five weekly divisions. Divisions scheduled for
Saturday: Victory Lap Late Models (40 Laps); Truckin Thunder Sportsman (35
laps); Budweiser Modified (30 Laps); Al’s Auto Parts Chargers (30 Laps); Dixie
Chopper All Americans (20 Laps) and the Recycler (Junk) Car Division (50 Laps).

6 and under free. Saturday, September 23rd admission will see adults at $12,
Seniors and Military $10, Students 13 – 17 years old $8, Children 7 – 12 years
