Digges, Jones are Virginia State Champions !

By John Bloom

Mark Digges and Mark Jones were crowned the Virginia State Champions in 4 Cylinder and Pure Stock racing at the Winchester Speedway Saturday night that saw 160 competitors take the green in B mains and features.

Jones got by the 2005 Champion Bill Henney on the final lap in the most exciting finish of the evening. The two had made contact on turn 2 of the last of the 35 lap Virginia State Championship event, but Jones beat Henney out of turn four as the two raced for the flag and the title. Jones, who started 3rd, had gotten the lead from pole setter Henney at the initial green and held the top spot until lap 24 when Henney got by to lead for the next 10 laps until the white flag drama proved to be Henney’s undoing. Paul Morgan was a distant 3rd, Butch Lambert 4th and hard charger Matt Kerns, who started 24th, finished 5th.The 24 car B Mains were won by David Kaiser and Eric Johnson.

Mark Digges became the 2006 4 Cylinder State champion when he passed race leader and pole sitter Rudy Philpott on lap 5 and never relinquished the lead throughout the 35 lap event. The final 4 laps he was pressured by Billy Sonner, Jr, who came all the way from his 20th starting position to finish 2nd, and was the race hard charger. Former champion John Stoll was 3rd while Kevin Thomas was 4th and Austin Kerby finished ahead of Robert Holmes for 5th. Sonner and Rodney Hoffman were B main winners in the 4 cylinder class. Both races saw 24 competitors take the green.

2006 Semi Late point champion Dennis Lamb took the open competitkon Limited Late Model main over Wayne Walls, Jr. The two battled for most of the race, with Walls, who started on the pole, being passed in mid race by Lamb, who started 10th. Todd Chicklo won the Limited consolation.

The racing action, the final events of the 2006 season, was sponsored by B & K Construction Equipment.

Davis Race Winner While Richwine Wins Point Championship

By John Bloom

Scott Richwine edged Tommy Armel for the 2006 Winchester Speedway Late Model Point Championship while Gerald Davis captured the Late Model Feature Saturday night. Davis started 7th and worked his way up to 2nd by the 12th lap when he got by early race leader Wesley Bonebrake and then held on for the win. Only 20 points separated point leader Richwine from Armel going into the evening’s racing, but lady luck was not on the side of Armel, as he had mechanical troubles in his heat and had to start scratch in the feature in a back up car. He gave a valiant effort, finishing 10th and was the race hard charger. Behind Davis were Wesley Bonebrake 2nd, Allen Brannon, 3rd, Tony Crim 4th and Richwine 5th. Heat winners were Allen Brannon and Jonathan DeHaven. 21 of the 23 Late Models started the feature.

Dennis Lamb captured the point championship in the Semi Lates by winning both his heat and the 23 car feature event.. Lamb, who started 4th got the lead from Butch Chapman on the 3rd lap and would have won by a half lap if it were not for two late race cautions. Bryan Kerns was 2nd, Sean Dawson 3rd, Michael Cox was 4th and Chris Clark was 5th. Kerns won the first heat with Lamb capturing the second.

Ray Priest , driving the Mike Corbin #29, led from start to finish in the 24 car Pure Stock main, for win number 2. Randy carter was 2nd, Matt Kerns 3rd, Michael Carter 4th, and Pure Stock Champion Mike Bennett was 5th. Bennett’s Pure Stock Championship was the only title determined before the night’s racing. Bennett, Terry Staton and Ernie Shirley took the heats while Kevin Deremer got a hard earned consolation win.

Roger Whitlock Jr. lost a nearly race long battle with eventual winner Greg Keister in the 24 car 4 Cylinder Feature, but won the points championship over Jeremy Tinsman. Whitlock trailed Tinsman by only 4 points entering the night’s action, and gained 2 more in heat race competition. His second place finish, coupled with Tinsman’s 5th place finish gave Whitlock the title. Chuck Johnson was 3rd in the feature and Billy Sonner, Jr, was 4th. Heat winners were Rodney Hoffman, Johnson and Whitlock while Randy Lineburg got career win number 1 in the consolation event.

A moment of silence was observed for Stanley (program man) McDonald, who passed away this week at Moosehavcn, Orange Park, Florida. Stanley sold Speedway programs during the ‘60’s and ‘70’s at the track.

There will be no racing at Winchester Speedway Saturday, September 23rd in preparation for the annual Winchester 200 , set for September 29th and 30th.

The season will end October 13th and 14th with the Virginia Nationals for the Pure Stocks and Four Cylinders. The Semi Lates will also be featured both nights.

Armel Takes Winchester Late Models

By John Bloom

Winchester’s Tommy Armel used a lap 7 pass of early race leader Roy Deese and held off a determined Scott Richwine the final 18 laps to win the 25 lap Late Model feature event Saturday night at the Winchester Speedway on a night that finished with fireworks and controversy. Armel started 3rd and worked his way past Brian Booze in order to catch Deese, who settled for 3rd. Frankie Plessenger was 4th and Gary Stuhler was 5th, just ahead of JT Spence. Gerald Davis was the race hard charger, after starting 18th and finishing 7th. Heats were won by Richwine, Spence, and Denny Bonebrake. Only 23 of the 28 Late Models were available for the feature, so there was no consolation event.

Rob Nichols cruised to the Semi Late victory, starting 2nd and finishing a couple of car lengths ahead of Kris Holliday. The most exciting part of the Semi Late feature was the torrid competition for 3rd thru 5th. Chris Clark finished 3rd, with Dennis Lamb, 4th, and Brian Buckler 5th. Heats were won by Lamb and Jeff Sweeney.

The Pure Stock feature was a very close 3 car battle the entire event, with point leader Mike Bennett finishing ahead of Terry Staton and Mike Corbin, who were 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Donnie Kenney, Jr. was a close 4th with Randy Carter 5th.. Heats went to Bennett, Staton, and Kevin Deremer with Ernie Shirley taking the B Main.

Glenn Worrell took the Virginia Sprints Series feature over Jerald Harris. Early race leader Pete Kingrea settled for 3rd.

The fireworks and controversy were saved for the final lap of the final race, the 4 cylinder feature, with Jeremy Tinsman getting the checkered flag over Greg Keister, Roger Whitlock, Robert Holmes and Billy Sonner, Jr, who were 2nd through 5th Things heated up when the 77W of Vance Williams made contact with the 2C of Whitlock on the front stretch midway between turn 4 and the finish line, causing the 2C to spin into the grandstand wall hard at the flagstand, but finishing the race (3rd) while crashing backward. Whitlock was uninjured, but not unruffled. Tempers flared, then cooled, with officials ruling that Williams deliberately initiated the contact and disqualified him, meaning that Williams received no points or money for the event. Speedway officials are now deliberating further sanctions and / or suspension time for Williams. Williams, Tinsman, Whitlock, and Mark Digges were the heat winners while Stacy Crider took what was believed to be his first career checkered in the large (18 car) consolation event.

135 cars were pitside for the five division racing sponsored by Jim Stutzman Chevrolet/Cadillac/Buick, Gary’s Excavating, and Maxx Powersports. Final point racing will be held Saturday, September 16th for all four divisions , sponsored by Martin Septic Service.

Gerald Davis wins Winchester Late Model feature

By John Bloom

Gerald Davis led a full field of 24 cars in the 25 lap Late Model feature from green to checkered in a dominating effort Saturday night at the Winchester Speedway. Allen Brannon finished a close second for the second consecutive week, but could not handle the Ford of Davis. Davis escaped trouble, although there were cautions on laps 21 and 22, allowing Brannon to restart right behind Davis. Brad Ritter won a battle with Tony Crim for 3rd with Jonathan DeHaven getting 5th ahead of Scott Richwine. The hard charger was Jonathan DeHaven. Point leader Tommy Armel was barely able to take the green, and then retired to the pits and was 24th. Brannon, Davis and Brad Omps were the heat winners

Brian Buckler, who started 2nd in the Semi Late Feature, also led from green to checkered, but a late race caution allowed last week’s winner, Dennis Lamb to challenge for the lead the final two laps. Lamb settled for 2nd with Rob Nichols 3rd, Bryan Kerns 4th, and Kevin feathers 5th. Feathers and Lamb were heat winners.

The Four Cylinders ran a 20 lap Summer Championship Feature event with Jeremy Tinsman, who also started 2nd, leading the entire race and winning the event – a close finish ahead of Vance Williams, who took advantage of some cautions to stage a furious effort from a 10th starting spot. Chuck Johnson, 3rd, Billy Sonner 4th, and Mark Digges 5th,all finished in a cluster with 6th place Greg Keister in the highly competitive event. Mike Hawbaker, Johnson, and Delmas Moreland were the heat winners while Tommy Whitt, Jr. won the consolation.

Michael Carter passed early race leader David Kaiser on the 6th lap of the 15 lap Pure Stock Feature and never looked back. Kaiser held off a determined Mike Corbin for 2nd and Donnie Kenney, Jr. passed Bobby Franklin late in the race for 4th. Dennis Lamb, Jr,, Mike Bennett, and Corbin won the heats while Randy Carter completely dominated the consolation.

A moment of silence was observed in recognition of the passing of Brent Davis of Wardensville, 25 year old first cousin of Late Model winner Gerald Davis and Speedway promoter Calvin Davis. Davis, who was part of the Speedway security detail, lost his life in an automobile accident near Capon Bridge, West Virginia on Sunday, August 13th

101 Cars were on hand for the four division racing sponsored by Mayhew Chevrolet. Next Saturday, all four divisions will be joined by the Virginia Sprint Series in action sponsored by Stutzman Chevrolet – Cadillac- Buick.

Stuhler captures Clore Memorial on Final Lap

By John Bloom

Two veteran drivers had fans on their feet for the closest finish in Mike Clore Memorial History Saturday night at the Winchester Speedway as Gary Stuhler edged Denny Bonebrake by less than half a car length on the last lap of the 41 lap event. Bo Feathers, who started on the outside front row, led the first 3 laps, but pulled in the pits with an overheating engine. Denny Bonebrake, who started 4th, inherited the lead from Feathers and led until lap 17 when Stuhler, who started 5th overtook Bonebrake on the outside. As the leaders started lapping traffic late in the race, Bonebrake caught Stuhler and passed him with 2 laps to go. Bonebrake looked to be headed for an unlikely win when the caution came out with one lap to go. Starting right behind Bonebrake, Stuhler pulled along side and then passed Bonebrake coming out of turn 4 for the victory. The race honors the only driver known to have died as a result of a crash in the 60 year history of the Winchester Speedway. Following Stuhler and Bonebrake were Jeremy Miller, 3rd, Sean Cosgrove, 4th and JT Spence, 5th, finishing ahead of Booper Bare. Tommy Armel, Feathers, and Spence were heat winners while Brad Omps took the consolation.

6 was a lucky number for Sean Dawson, driver of the 06 Semi Late at Winchester, as Dawson won for the very first time at the historic speedway, starting 6th and getting the lead mid race from Kris Holiday, who ended up 2nd. Dennis Lamb powered his way to 3rd while Butch Chapman was 4th and Chris Clark 5th. Brian Buckler and Bryan Kerns were the heat winners. A consolation was not necessary for the Semi Lates.

13 was an unlucky number for Donnie Kenney, Jr, who lost his lead to Terry Carlyle due to a flat tire on lap 13. Kenney started on the pole and was in control of the race up to that point when racing contact dropped him from contention. Kenney fell back to – you might know - 13th position at the end of the race. Mike Bennett was 2nd, Mike Corbin 3rd, Bob Gladden 4th and Kevin Deremer 5th. Matt Kerns, who rolled his #1 Pure Stocker in the first heat, qualified for the event in the consolation, started 21st and finished 8th in an amazing comeback effort. Carlyle, Terry Staton, and Michael Carter were heat winners with Bobby Franklin taking the consy.

Roger Whitlock, Jr. won the 4 cylinder feature when remarkably the top two drivers in the event pulled in the pits during the 2nd caution of the race. William Riley and Mark Digges, running 1st and 2nd, pitted during the caution, giving the lead to Delmas Moreland, who then gave up the lead to Whitlock who used a mid race pass to win the event. Chuck Johnson. Moreland, and Jeremy Tinsman were heat winners with Ed Gageby taking the consolation.

The speedway had a record 115 cars on hand in action sponsored by B & W Excavating. Next week, all four divisions will see action, sponsored by Feathers and Sons roofing, and Va. Real Estate Group of Keller Williams.

Winchester’s Jonathan DeHaven got career win number one in the Late Model Division by taking the Late Model feature Saturday night at the Winchester Speedway, DeHaven started 8th and slowly worked his way to the front and got a break when a caution flew for Herk Armel on lap 20. Early leader Brad Omps was cruising with an 8 to 10 car length lead at the time, bringing the 13 D of DeHaven on the back bumper of Omps. On lap 21, DeHaven got by Omps and held on for the win. Gerald Davis was also able to pass Omps for 2nd and received the hard charger award, advancing 11 positions from his 13th starting spot. Omps was 3rd, followed by Scott Richwine, 4th and Walter Crouch 5th. Brian Tavenner got his 1st Late Model checkered in heat number 1, while Omps took the second heat.

Dennis Lamb led the Semi Late Feature from green to checkered, starting on the pole and dominating the race. Scott Merryman was 2nd, with Kris Hollday battling Kevin Feathers for 3rd and Chris Clark, who settled for 5th. Holliday and Sam Crouch were the Semi Late heat winners.

The Pure Stock race had a dramatic, exciting finish as pole sitter Donnie Kenney Jr. dominated the entire race until the final lap when David Kaiser made his move on the final turn. Kaiser, who started 4th, used an inside move on Kenney to win by little more than a bumper at the finish. Matt Kerns was 3rd, Mike Bennett was 4th, and Dennis Lamb, Jr. was 5th. Heats were won by Mike Corbin, Terry Carlyle, and Brian Luttrell. Randy Carter dominated the consolation.

Billy Sonner, Jr. in the 55H got the jump on Vance Williams for the 1st lap of the four cylinder main, but Williams led on the second lap and then held off a determined Jeremy Tinsman and Mark Digges, to win the four cylinder feature. Tinsman and Digges were able to put some pressure on Williams late in the race, but to no avail and were 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Sonner was 4th and Greg Keister was 5th. Digges, Williams and Sonner were the heat winners.

Racing was sponsored by Apple Valley Mortgage and Danny Wilson. Next week, the 41 lap Mike Clore Memorial for Late Models will feature a 4 division race card sponsored by B & W Excavation. (double points for Late Models)

SPENCE WINS 72 LAPPER

By John Bloom

Winchester’s J T Spence captured the prestigious 72 lap Paul Johnson Memorial race for Late Models Saturday night at the Winvchester Speedway. Spence started 4th and continued to put pressure on Denny Bonebrake, who led from the initial green until Spence was able to slip by on the 32nd lap. Spence stayed in control, despite a lap 67 caution which brought the 00 of Bo Feathers to the back bumper of Spence. Feathers settled for 2nd, but was named the Hard Charger award winner for advancing from the 18th starting position. Veteran Gary Stuhler, who had won several Johnson Memorial events in the past, battled Feathers late in the race, but was 3rd with Andy Anderson 4th and Bonebrake 5th. Feathers won the consolation, while Spence, Gerald Davis and Tommy Armel won the heats.

Rob Nichols of Winchester started 4th and got by Byran Kerns on the 6th lap of the Semi Late feature and then went unchallenged for the victory. Sean Dawson was 2nd, Bryan Kerns 3rd, Chris Clark 4th and Dennis Lamb, who started 20th was 5th. Nichols and Clark were the heat winners.

Ray Priest became the 11th different winner in the Pure Stockers with a hard earned feature win. Lee Canfield got the lead at the drop of the green, but spun on turn four coming in for lap 2. Priest inherited the lead and stayed ahead of a tight pack of 5 other drivers in an exciting race. Mike Bennett was 2nd, Terry Staton 3rd, Donnie Kenney, Jr 4th, and Bobby Franklin outran Terry Carlyle for 5th. Mike Corbin, Staton, and Kenney Jr. won the heats with Bob Gladden taking the consy.

Armel is Feature Winner on Ladies Night

by John Bloom

Winchester’s Tommy Armel won a tremendous battle with Gerald Davis to capture the 25 lap, 22 car field Late Model feature at the Winchester Speedway. Armel was voted by the fans as “sexiest male driver” on ladies night which featured 12 women driving in an old fashioned Powder Puff race. Armel, who started 5th, got the lead in the Late Model Feature on lap 4, but Davis pulled along side during laps 9 through 11, and eventually got the lead on lap 12, only to be passed one final time on lap 24 by Armel who successfully worked the outside of the track. Scott Richwine made it a 3 car race the final 5 laps, but settled for 3rd. Wesley Bonebrake was 4th , ahead of his father Denny Bonebrake who challenged, but finished 5th. Mike Washauer was the hard charger, starting 21st and finishing 9th. The veteran Denny Bonebrake and Herk Armel were the heat winners.

The largest crowd of the season saw 12 ladies try for the Powder Puff Championship and the 15 lap event was an exciting one with plenty of thrills and spills. Lori Bushman, niece of Late Model driver Tommy Armel won the event, finishing ahead of Janet Kenney, who started 11th in the 12 car field and finished 2nd. Barbara Armel Sweeney, who had battled behind Bushman for most of the event, settled for 3rd.

Front Royal’s Dennis Lamb dominated the 20 car Semi Late main, getting the lead on lap 6 and surviving several cautions to hold off a late charge by Rob Nichols who finished 2nd. Brian Buckler was 3rd, Butch Chapman, Jr was 4th with Scott Sweeney 5th. Jeff Sweeney and Lamb were the heat winners.

Terry Staton got his 2nd win of the season, starting 2nd, but leading the entire race after getting the lead on lap 2 from pole sitter Donnie Kenney Jr. Terry Carlyle was 2nd, Mike Bennet 3rd, Ernie Shirley 4th, and David Kaiser 5th. Heats went to Shirley, Staton, and Kenney while Lee Canfield took the consolation.

Mark Digges looked to be control of the 4 cylinder feature, dominating the first 3 laps. Greg Keister brought out a yellow when he had a flat tire, and during the caution, Digges went to the pits with a mechanical problem. Chuck Johnson, who started 6th, inherited the lead for lap 4 and was never passed, despite efforts by Roger Whitlock, Jr and Jeremy Tinsman, who finished 2nd and 3rd. 4th was Vance Williams and Billy Sonner was 5th. Robert Holmes, Johnson, and Whitlock were the heat winners.

The ladies event was sponsored by Centre For Fitness., Groves- Winchester Harley Davidson., and Family Country Market. The regular racing card was sponsored by Martins Septic Services.

Next week the speedway will host the 72 lap late Model Summer Championship – the Paul Johnson Memorial event along with regular racing by the Semi Lates, Four Cylinders and the Pure Stocks – with racing sponsored by D & S Racing Collectibles.

Winchester’s Chris Clark got his first career Semi Late win Saturday night at the Winchester Speedway during night 2 of the racing Overdose Weekend sponsored by Stutzman Chevrolet Cadillac Buick. There were no injuries during the melee. Dennis Lamb, who finished 2nd, and Brian Buckler, who settled for 3rd could not seriously challenge Clark for the lead. Sean Dawson was 4th and Rob Nichols 5th. Mitch Miller orchestrated the hard charger award by starting 22nd and finishing 13th. The heats went to Buckler and Nichols.

Jerald Harris took the 30 lap Virginia Sprint Feature, topping a fine 22 car field. Jerald Harris and brother Tony, who won the Virginia Sprint Feature the night before, were the heat winners.

In the second 20 lapper, Kaiser, who got win number one in 2006, swapped the lead several times with Terry Staton before finally getting the lead for good with a mid race pass of Staton. Terry Carlyle was 2nd, followed by Donnie Kenney Jr., Mike Corbin and Matt Kerns, 3rd through 5th.

Heats went to Lee Canfield and Kaiser.

                                                              Davis wins Stultz Memorial

Gerald Davis of Delray, West Virginia put on quite a show at the Winchester Speedway, winning the Lee Stultz Memorial 40 lap Late Model Feature sponsored by Shelleys Truck Caps and Trailer Sales. It was an improbable win to say the least, as Davis started 20th out of the 24 car field, picking off his opponents one by one and getting second place by lap 29. Early race leader Richard Irwin was passed by JT Spence on lap 24. When a caution tightened the field on lap 36, Davis got by Spence and held off the Winchester driver the final four laps. Needless to say, the hard charger for the event was Davis. Following Spence was Andy Anderson, 3rd, Allen Brannon 4th, and Irwin just held off a late race charge from Kris Eaton for 5th. The feature was red flagged on lap 10 when the driveshaft from the 13D of Jonathan DeHaven snapped, striking the driver on the right elbow. After a quick visit by the ambulance crew, DeHaven was pronounced OK and was not taken to the hospital. Tommy Armel, Dehaven, and Brannon were the heat winners.

Rob Nichols , starting in the 3rd spot, got by Sean Dawson on lap 5 of the Semi Late feature and held off Brian Buckler for the victory. Dennis Lamb was a strong 3rd, followed by Dawson and Jeff Sweeney, who out-dueled his brother Scott Sweeney for 5th place. Heat winners were Chris Clark and Jeff Sweeney.

Bob Gladden won the Pure Stock feature, leading from the initial green to the checkered, finishing ahead of Michael Carter, Mike Bennett, Terry Staton and Mike Corbin, the top 5 of the 24 car field. Multiple cars got into the #5 of Brad Wiley during the event causing Wiley to flip completely over and onto his wheels. There were no injuries. Terry Carlyle, Corbin and Ray Priest were the heat winners.

Roger Whitlock came all the way from his 8th starting spot to win the four cylinder main with a late pass of Billy Sonner, Jr. Sonner inherited the lead on lap 7 when early leader Jeremy Tinsman tangled with a lapped car on turn 2.

The four cylinder feature was very exciting with Whitlock, Sonner, and Vance Williams three wide with just a lap and a half to go. Sonner was 2nd, with Williams settling for 3rd. 4th was Mark Digges with Rodney Hoffman 5th. Tinsman and Sonner won the heats.

A racing doubleheader is scheduled next weekend with Friday Night, June 30th action featuring the Virginia Sprints, Late Models, Pure Stocks and 4 cylinders.

Saturday night, July 1st the sprints return, plus twin features for the Pure Stocks and a regular show for the Semi Lates, and a total inversion16 lap 4 cylinder feature- Both nightly events are sponsored by Stutzman Chevy/Cadillac and Buick.

Feathers Wins Round 2 of Shootout

Winchester’s Bo Feathers edged out Andy Anderson by a bumper to win round two of the Winchester/Hagerstown shootout Friday night at the Winchester Speedway in action sponsored by B & W Excavating. Feathers started on the outside front row and seemed to have the 40 lap feature in hand until a Jason Covert spin on lap 32 brought out a caution, with Anderson, in 2nd place, on the back bumper of Feathers on the restart. Anderson took the high side and appeared to be headed for victory after getting the lead on lap 36, but on the final lap, Feathers made a daring move on turns 3 and 4 on the inside, and was declared the winner in the closest finish this year at the speedway. Gary Stuhler, who had to qualify by winning the consolation, started 19th , but finished 3rd. JT Spence was 4th and Jeremy Miller 5th. Heats went to Jimmy Bernheisel, Jonathan DeHaven, and Anderson.

Mark Jones took the Pure Stock Main after starting 7th, and finally getting the lead from Ray Priest on lap 10 of the 15 lap feature. Priest ran high near the railing on turns 3 and 4 and had to settle for 6th. Mike Corbin was a strong 2nd, with Donnie Kenney 3rd, Brian Luttrell 4th and Mike Bennett 5th. Kenney, Terry Staton, and Bennett took the heats, two of which were red flagged for serious accidents. Kevin Deremer’s car was seriously damaged in one red flag incident on the backstretch, and Randy Carter was transported to Winchester Medical Center as a precaution after losing consciousness momentarily when his Pure Stocker slammed into the front stretch railing. David Kaiser took the Pure Stock consolation.

Greg Keister took home the checkered flag in the Four Cylinder Feature which was also very exciting with no less than four leaders, William Riley, Vance Williams, Riley a second time, Jeremy Tinsman, and Keister , who started 10th, and didn’t lead until the 10th lap. Roger Whitlock, Jr., Chuck Johnson, and Keister took the heats.

The Semi Lates had the night off, but will return along with the Pure Stocks, Four Cylinders, and Late Models for the 40 lap Lee Stultz Memorial for Late Models next Saturday, June 24th sponsored by Stutzman Chevrolet Cadillac.

There were 96 cars pitside for the 3 division racing.
