Smith wins Western Md. Nationals at The Rock

Nov. 3, 2007

CUMBERLAND, Md. -- Tim Smith Jr. set the pace throughout the weekend to capture the Limited Late Model win in the 5th Annual Western Maryland Nationals on Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

Smith of McVeytown, Pa., capped off The Rock's 2007 season by setting fast time, winning his heat and dash on Friday night and taking home the $2,500 prize in the 50-lap feature on Saturday.

Saturday's races were filled with cautions as Smith and four other drivers outlasted the competition. Tom Warren, who remains the only driver in any class to ever repeat in the Western Maryland Nationals, won the Hobby Stock race for the third straight time. Jamey Swank won the Street Stock race, Joe Snodgrass won the Classic Car event and Jeff Tuel came away with the 4-Cylinder win.

Smith earned the pole for the A&C Racing Engines feature by winning Friday's dash and drove away with the lead over Andy Fries, D.J. Troutman and Matt Sponaugle.

Attrition took a toll on the top five and the rest of the field throughout the race. Troutman went out at lap seven and Fries, who dropped to third behind Sponaugle just before the fuel stop at lap 25, went out as soon as the race restarted.

Smith seemed to have the race in hand until he caught traffic and Sponaugle closed in at lap 42. On the next lap, Sponaugle shot inside of Smith in turns one and two but the 10th caution negated the move.

Smith regained complete command for the final seven laps and won by about 2.5 seconds over Sponaugle. Randy Burkholder, who started 20th, ended up third. Shawn Claar and Mike Duck completed the top five.

Swank was in control for all 30 laps of the Street Stock feature to win $1,000. Randy Wible kept the race close in the final laps, trailing Swank by just two car lengths at the finish.

Swank endured seven cautions including two at laps 26 and 27. He led by as much as a straightaway.

Wible started fifth and got up to second by lap five. On lap 13 he slid into the infield, lost second to Ken Taylor but kept going. Two laps later he regained second when Taylor's car broke.

John Whitfield finished third after starting 14th. He got third on lap 22 in turn four. Jim Bendishaw, who started 19th, made his way to fourth on lap 26. Randy Zechman completed the top five.

Snodgrass took the lead after the first of three cautions on lap nine to win the Classic Car 30-lap feature. Bill Brown Sr. finished second, two car lengths behind Snodgrass at the finish. Kurt Welsh, Joe Alder and Al Daniels completed the top five.

After starting on the pole, Welsh led the first three laps before Roland Brown got by on the high side of turn three on lap four. Welsh and Brown traded the lead for the next three laps.

After Snodgrass took the lead, Brown got second and Alder moved to third. Welsh recaptured third two laps after a red flag on lap 23.

Warren started on the pole and led the entire way to the finish of the Hobby Stock feature. The first half of the race was competitive as Marcius VanMeter, Steve Fadley, Jimmy Best, Brian Shaffer and Dave Brown raced for spots behind Warren.

VanMeter was able to close on Warren after getting by Best and Fadley on lap six. Fadley later retired on lap 12 after he lost a wheel during contact with Best. On the restart, Warren had to hold off VanMeter in turn four to stay out front.

VanMeter's problems began when he stopped in turn two while trying to catch Warren. He was involved in another incident one lap later and left the race.

Warren pulled away in the last five laps and won by 10 car lengths. Best stayed ahead of Brown for second with one lap to go. Brown, Shaffer and Terry Norris completed the top five.

Tuel got the lead back from Mike Lauffer to get the victory in the 15-lap 4-Cylinder feature. Tuel, the pole-sitter, spent the first eight laps out front. Lauffer got by in turn one following the fourth caution on lap eight.

Tuel fought back on lap 10 and drove low in turn four to get around Lauffer. Chris Booher took second on the next lap and Lauffer fell to fourth behind Shawn Crunkilton. When the final caution came on lap 13, Booher, Lauffer, Crunkilton and Ray Wright raced hard for position while Tuel pulled away to victory.

Booher ended up second. Lauffer edged out Wright and Crunkilton for third in a three-way race to the finish line.

Elliott repeats at Big Kahuna VII

Oct. 6, 2007

CUMBERLAND, Md. – One year later, another commanding drive for Ricky Elliott. The Seaford, Del., driver won his second straight Big Kahuna Saturday night race at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

Elliott started on the pole and left Jeremy Miller and the rest of the field to chase him throughout the Big Kahuna VII and Mid- tlantic Championship Series finale. Khi Swanger and Mike Lauffer won the Street Stock and 4-Cylinder races as part of Saturday night's program.

Elliott, who early in the program showed his strength with the second-quickest qualifying lap, shot in front of Miller at the outset and  led by a dozen car lengths prior to the first caution on lap eight.

Miller could never get much closer and trailed by a second through the final five laps to the finish. Steve Casebolt started 15th, worked his way to fourth on lap 19 and ended up third after Jack Pencil dropped out on lap 33.

Friday's winner, Jason Covert, was mired deep in the pack after qualifying through a consolation race. He started 16th and climbed to fifth before losing the spot to Casebolt on lap 16. Scott Haus gave up fifth and headed to the pits on lap 23, leaving Covert and Boom Briggs to race side by side for the next several laps for fifth.

Covert fended off Briggs and ended up fourth when Pencil fell out. Covert only needed to start the main event to clinch his second- traight MACS championship and celebrated with his team and family in victory lane after the race.

Briggs was fifth and Rod Conley, Matt Lux, Jackie Boggs, Jim Yoder and Tim Dohm rounded out the top 10.

Miller edged Elliott for the fast time award and $200 bonus from Ritchey Sandblasting. Forty-seven cars timed in on Saturday.

Swanger held off Bill Henney and Daniel Cornman to win the 20-lap main event for the Street Stock portion. Swanger started on the outside pole and got the lead early over Cornman and Henney. Henney moved to second on lap four.

A caution on lap five set up a good battle for the top two spots over the next several laps. Swanger and Henney raced side by side on the backstretch on lap seven and again on the frontstretch on lap eight. Cornman and Henney traded second on lap nine and again on lap 11 before the yellow came out three times.

After the second attempt to restart, Swanger and Henney made contact in turn two and Henney lost four spots. Another caution saved his second-place run before a lap was completed.

Swanger and Henney were three car lengths apart at the finish. Cornman finished third and Mike Desch came from 22nd to get fourth. Greg Hainsey was fifth. Brandon Hoover, Dave Brown, Kevin Keefer, John Whitfield and Dave Swanger completed the top 10 in the 28-car field.

Lauffer ran away with the 4-Cylinder feature that started with 28 cars. After starting fourth, Lauffer got the lead on the backstretch of lap one and led by a straightaway when the race ended for a red flag at lap 11.

The rest of the top five spots changed quickly after a lap two crash. Dwain Rhodes, Jeff Tuel, Mark Seiler and Jason Riggleman piled up in turn one. Only Seiler recovered to get back to the top five. He finished fifth.

Brandon Powell started 10th and ended up second, battling by Shawn Crunkilton after halfway. Crunkilton was third and Jason Thompson was fourth.

The race on Oct. 13 has been cancelled. The next race is the Western Maryland Nationals, featuring Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks, 4-Cylinders and Classics on Oct. 26-27. A practice session will be held Oct. 25. The early entry deadline is Oct. 22.

Covert wins first race of Big Kahuna VII

Oct. 5, 2007

CUMBERLAND, Md. – Jason Covert came one race closer to winning his second Mid-Atlantic Championship Series title by taking the victory on the first night of the Big Kahuna VII on Friday at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

Covert, of York Haven, Pa., led 43 of 44 laps to win the $5,000 prize over Steve Casebolt. In other action, Steve Fadley picked up the TC Race Cars Hobby Stock win and Bill Brown Jr. won the All-American Outlaws race.

After running away with the heat race and dash wins to earn the pole, Covert fended off a challenge from Rod Conley at the start. The two swapped the lead on the backstretch and Covert recaptured the lead for good.

Casebolt worked his way from fifth to second in the first eight laps and kept Covert within sight throughout the race. After the second half of the race went caution-free, Covert increased his lead by as much as a dozen car lengths through the finish.

Mike Balzano finished third after running as high as second early in the race. Conley ended up fourth and Jack Pencil was fifth. Scott Haus was sixth and Alex Ferree was seventh after starting 13th.

The race's biggest mover was Jackie Boggs, who took the 26th and final provisional starting spot and raced his way to eighth at the finish. Ricky Elliott was ninth and fast qualifier Jim Yoder rounded out the top 10.

Yoder received $200 from Ritchey Sandblasting for the fastest time among 51 cars.

Fadley, the Hobby Stock track champion, persevered in the 20-lap feature over Mike Duck and Mike Moore. Fadley crashed in practice on Thursday night and thanked his crew for getting the car back together in time to sit on the outside pole and take an early lead over Duck, Moore Joe Railey and Marcius VanMeter.

VanMeter came on strong on the second lap to take the lead from Fadley and seemed to be in control through the halfway point. Just four laps shy of the finish, VanMeter's car slowed on the frontstretch and he was forced out.

With the lead back, Fadley held off Duck and Moore to the finish line in a one-lap sprint after the caution came out for Railey's spin. Dale Zufall and Harry Smith completed the top five.

Brown took over the lead following a restart on lap one and stayed ahead of Martin Graybeal by a car length at the finish of the 25- ap All-American Outlaws feature.

Brown pulled away by more than a dozen car lengths in just five laps as Graybeal worked his way to second. Graybeal chased Brown through traffic, narrowly avoiding a crash with a lapped car on the  backstretch on lap 11. By halfway, Brown had a 2.5 second lead.

The lead wouldn't last as cautions kept Graybeal close. Graybeal took a final shot at Brown out of turn four on the last lap but ran out of room. Glenn Elliott, Allen Cullum and Nate Topper completed the top five.

Troutman wins race, Pencil gets championship at The Rock

Sept. 22, 2007

CUMBERLAND, Md. – Dave Troutman led the final four laps to win as the regular season concluded and drivers tuned up for the Big Kahuna VII on Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

Troutman scored his first win of the season in the Pepsi Super Late Model feature. Daniel Cornman capped off a stellar season with his 11th win and another track championship in the Allegany Scrap Street Stocks.

In other action, Jimmy Moreland (8-Cylinders) and Steve Fadley (TC Race Cars Hobby Stocks) secured their track championships with victories. Mike Lauffer won for the first time in the 4-Cylinders to conclude the night. Other drivers crowned included Jack Pencil (Super Late Models) and Jason Imes (4-Cylinders).

In the 25-lap Pepsi Super Late Model feature, Troutman had to track down Wayne Johnson late in the race. Troutman, who started fourth, caught up to Johnson in traffic on lap 21.

Johnson chose to go high to lap a car ahead and Troutman took advantage by shooting to the inside for the lead in turn one. Troutman claimed victory by eight car lengths over Johnson.

Johnson swapped the lead with Pencil in the first two laps of the race. After retaking the lead on lap two, Johnson controlled the race until the final five laps. Troutman eventually passed Pencil for second on lap seven to get into contention with Johnson.

Pencil finished third to claim his third track championship, a new record for Super Late Model titles at The Rock. Greg Fetters ended up fourth and Chris Harr was fifth.

With the title already clinched, Cornman pulled off another victory by a wide margin in the 16-lap Street Stock feature. He took the lead from Chris Chamberlain after the first lap and stayed in control throughout the race to win by half of a straightaway.

John Whitfield finished second while Brandon Hoover, Tony Daniels and Justin Bonnett completed the top five. Behind Cornman, the top five shuffled throughout the race. Jimmy Iser, Don Zechman, Kristen Etling and Chamberlain all held spots in the top five before problems sidelined all but Chamberlain by the finish.

Fadley clinched his first-ever Hobby Stock title with his sixth victory of the season. Fadley lost the lead to Marcius VanMeter but regained it when VanMeter lost a cylinder when the race resumed after an accident on lap 11.

Fadley led until lap three when VanMeter got the lead in the third turn. Fadley and Mike Moore chased VanMeter for the next five laps before a caution helped close the gap.

Fadley finished seven car lengths ahead of VanMeter at the finish. R.T. Troutman eventually got by Mike Moore to get third. Mike VanMeter completed the top five.

Moreland claimed his eighth win and first championship in the 12-lap 8-Cylinder feature. He led every lap and kept several car lengths of distance over the second-place car of Kevin Brown throughout the race.

Brown eventually lost his engine and coasted across the finish line for second. Runner-up in the point standings, Jim DeArmitt finished third. Mel DeArmitt was fourth and John Swartzwelder was fifth.

Lauffer earned the victory by holding off Jeff Tuel to the finish in the 12-lap 4-Cylinder race. Lauffer led Jason Riggleman and Tuel through lap eight before the action up front heated up. Riggleman was forced to the pits for a tire change and gave second to Tuel.

Tuel briefly got by Lauffer on lap nine and traded the lead on the fronstretch the next time by. On lap 11, Lauffer worked around Tuel up high in turn one and held on by three car lengths to the finish.

Behind Tuel in second, Chris Booher finished third. Ray Shepherd, driving for track champion Jason Imes, finished fourth and Martin Vinosky finished fifth.

Up next, The Rock's biggest races of the season come on Oct. 4-6 at the Big Kahuna VII in conjunction with the finale to the Mid- tlantic Championship Series. Sponaugle wins Hilliard Memorial race The Rock

Sept.15, 2007

CUMBERLAND, Md. – The regular season ended for the Sunoco Limited Late Models with Matt Sponaugle in victory lane and Randy Burkholder affirmed as champion after the inaugural running of the George Hilliard Memorial on a chilly Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

Sponaugle led the entire 20 laps, largely unchallenged, for his fourth win of the season. Other winners included Daniel Cornman, who dominated the Allegany Scrap Street Stock race for his 10th win of the season. Marcius VanMeter and Kevin Brown won the Hobby Stock and 8-Cylinder features for the second straight week. Kurt Welsh returned to victory lane with a last-lap pass for the Classic Cars win.

Sponaugle, who started second, took the lead at the outset over pole-sitter Mike Duck and pulled away by as much as half of a straightaway over D.J. Troutman, Duck and Burkholder.

The field stayed close after three cautions, the last coming with two laps to go. Sponaugle continued on without a challenge to take the checkered flag by four car lengths over Troutman and Duck.

Burkholder, who ended up fourth, tied Bob Gordon for the most track championships in the current division and its predecessor class. Gordon won consecutive Semi-Late championships in 1998-99.

Ashley Barrett finished fifth after battling over several laps with Jake Griffith.

Cornman led all 16 laps by starting on the pole and taking off from the field early. He briefly lost his advantage on a caution at the halfway point but easily pulled away to win by more than half of a straightaway.

His victory total now leads all divisions this season and he clinched his second track championship in three seasons with one race
remaining.

Brandon Hoover earned his best finish of the season with second. John Whitfield held off Tony Daniels for third and Greg Hainsey finished fifth.

VanMeter tied Steve Fadley and Mike Moore for the TC Race Cars Hobby Stock division lead with his fifth victory. VanMeter, who started seventh, made his way to the front by lap three. He was locked in a tight battle from the start with Joe Railey, Tom Warren and Moore. Railey and Moore spun on back-to-back laps, leaving Fadley to pursue VanMeter for the rest of the race.

VanMeter was kept from running away with the event by a caution with three laps to go. He ended up winning by 10 car lengths over Fadley. Brandon LaSalle held off Bill Replogle to finish third. Mike Siegele ended up fifth.

Brown recovered from a spin on lap three to climb back to the front with two laps to go to claim the 12-lap 8-Cylinder feature win. On lap three, Brown was trying to chase down leader Jimmy Moreland when he lost control in turn four.

John Swartzwelder closed in and passed Moreland two laps later. Brown got second back on lap seven and took the lead from Swartzwelder following a restart on lap 10. Brown held off Swartzwelder by a car length at the finish. Jim DeArmitt, Moreland and Bruce Claar completed the top five.

Welsh chased Glenn Elliott throughout for 19 laps of the 20-lap Classic Cars feature before finally getting a chance to make a move. A caution set up a one-lap sprint to the finish and Welsh went after Elliott on the restart.

He got to the inside in turn three and held on as the two made slight contact to charge into the lead and take the victory. Elliott ended up 11th after spinning out.

Bill Brown Sr. finished second and Joe Snodgrass finished third after starting 13th. Brian Diehl ran in the top five throughout the race and finished fourth. Jim Crocker rounded out the top five.

The remaining championships will be decided next Saturday, Sept. 22 for the Pepsi Super Late Models, 4-Cylinders, Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks and 8-Cylinders. Warm-ups start at 7 p.m. Racing continues into October beginning with the Big Kahuna VII on Oct. 4-6 for the MACStour. For more information, visit the speedway's Web site at www.therockspeedway.com.

Another win for Troutman at The Rock

Sept. 8, 2007

CUMBERLAND, Md. – D.J. Troutman, Bob Jay, Marcius VanMeter, Eddie Livingston and Kevin Brown earned wins as the 2007 season entered its final stretch on Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

Troutman took the win in the 20-lap Sunoco Limited Late Model feature event by holding off Randy Burkholder. He started on the outside pole and led every lap.

Burkholder closed in after halfway and challenged Troutman on lap 15 off of turn four. Troutman stayed on his line and eventually built his lead back to several car lengths heading into the final lap.

Two weeks after taking the Pepsi Super Late Model win, Troutman won his second Limited Late feature of the season by six car lengths over Burkholder, Matt Sponaugle, Matt Emerick and Travis Stickley.

Jay led nearly every lap to win the 16-lap Allegany Scrap Street Stock feature by less than a car length over Daniel Cornman. The win was Jay's first of the season in his first appearance.

Randy Zechman battled Jay for the lead early in the race. The two raced side by side for much of the first 10 laps. Zechman briefly took the lead on lap 10 but gave it back to Jay when he had to pit with a  mechanical problem.

After Zechman fell out, Daniel Cornman moved up to second to keep the pressure on Jay. Jay never wavered on the last lap and took the win over Cornman, Tony Daniels, Bill Pluta Jr. and Chris Chamberlain.

VanMeter raced Steve Fadley early for the lead and went on to get his fourth victory in the 15-lap TC Race Cars Hobby Stock feature.  VanMeter started fifth and Fadley started sixth. Fadley got to the lead first by getting around Alan Shives on lap three.

VanMeter followed Fadley to second and began trying high and low to take the lead away. On lap six, he shot to the inside of Fadley and took the lead in turn three.

By lap eight, Fadley headed for the pit area with a mechanical problem, leaving Joe Railey, Shives and Mike Moore to chase VanMeter.

A caution on the final lap allowed the competition to close in but VanMeter drove to the finish line four car lengths ahead of Railey, Shives, R.T. Troutman and Jimmy Sacco.

Livingston was the surviving winner in the 4-Cylinder feature when the race ended at 11 laps after the lead cars tangled. He worked his way back to the front of the field and avoided a multi-car accident among leaders Chris Booher and Jason Imes in turn two.

Livingston started sixth and was running in the top five when a flat tire cost him track position early. Up front, Rob Prinkey and Jason Imes paced the field through four cautions by lap eight.

Imes took the lead on lap nine and Booher took second. The two battled for the lead until the last-lap accident knocked both out of contention. Behind Livingston, Scott Krumanacker, Dwain Rhodes, Bob Imes and Booher completed the top five.

Brown started on the pole and led all 12 laps for the 8-Cylinder Junk car feature win. The win was Brown's fifth of the season and stopped a four-race win streak by runner-up Jimmy Moreland.

Moreland never let Brown get too far away and cut Brown's early lead down to two car lengths on laps seven through nine. Brown ended up winning by four car lengths over Moreland, John Swartzwelder, Jim DeArmitt and Bruce Claar.

During intermission, children were given rides around the speedway by several drivers. The ride-along program was sponsored by Cici's Pizza of LaVale.

The season ends for the Limited Late Models with the George Hilliard Memorial next Saturday, Sept. 15. Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks, 8-Cylinders and Classic Cars will also be in action. All other divisions end the regular season on Sept. 22. Warm-ups start at 7 p.m.

D.J. Troutman wins Shultz Memorial at The Rock

Aug. 26, 2007

CUMBERLAND, Md. – D.J. Troutman saw his chance and made his move with eight laps to go for the victory in the Dwane Shultz Memorial on Sunday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

Troutman got under Scott Rhodes in the Pepsi Super Late Model feature event on a restart with nine laps to go for his first win in the division and second overall including an earlier win the Sunoco Limited Late Model class this season.

Daniel Cornman and Jimmy Moreland won their fourth straight races in the Allegany Scrap Street Stocks and 8-Cylinders. Mike Moore and Steve Riggleman made the right moves to get wins in the TC Race Cars Hobby Stock and 4-Cylinder races.

Rhodes started on the pole and paced the field through halfway while D.J. Troutman kept closing. D.J. Troutman started fourth and took over second at the start to get in position to chase Rhodes.

When the caution waved for the fourth and final time on lap 16, Rhodes went high in turn four and D.J. and Dave Troutman passed by.

D.J. Troutman went on to win by 10 car lengths over Dave Troutman. Rhodes swapped third with Keith Jackson before getting it back on lap 20 permanently. Jackson and Doug Burkholder completed the top five.

The 16-lap Allegany Scrap Street Stock race was again settled among Cornman and Mike Warrenfeltz. Cornman started seventh and jumped up to third in two laps. Warrenfeltz, the pole-sitter, and John Whitfield both gave way on the restart after lap two. Cornman went to the outside to pass both to get the lead.

Cornman led by as much as 10 car lengths before the final caution on lap 13. He beat Warrenfeltz by two car lengths to the finish. The win was Cornman's ninth of the season.

Jimmy Iser ended up third. Rick Wright and Randy Zechman were fourth and fifth.  The closest race of the night ended with Moore in victory lane over Marcius VanMeter and Steve Fadley. The three drivers battled nearly the entire race, with Moore leading early before giving way to Fadley after lap three.

VanMeter joined in on lap four and tried for several laps to get to the outside around Moore and Fadley. Eventually Fadley held off VanMeter and Moore switched to the outside to make the winning move.

Moore went to the outside on lap 11 to pass both cars and edged Fadley at the finish line by inches when the caution came out. Another caution on the final lap allowed Fadley and VanMeter one more shot. Those two ended up side by side on Moore's bumper to the finish line.  VanMeter nipped Fadley for second while R.T. Troutman and David Puckett completed the top five.

Riggleman won his first race of the season by shooting past leader Jason Imes and Mark Seiler with one lap to go in the 12-lap 4- ylinder race. Riggleman, who started fifth, closed on Imes and Seiler on lap 11 and got by low going in to turn three. He went on to win by several car lengths.

Imes held on to get second over Seiler. Brandon Powell scored his first top-five of the season by running fourth and Vince Winters came back from a crash last week to get fifth.

Moreland took his seventh win of the season by patiently working his way around Jim DeArmitt and John Swartzwelder in the first four laps of the 12-lap 8-Cylinder Junk Car event.

Once out front, Moreland cruised to victory by half of a straightaway. Swartzwelder diced with DeArmitt for second until the finish. Jim DeArmitt, Mel DeArmitt and Alan Lowery completed the top five.

The Rock will be off next week and return with racing on Saturday, Sept. 8 with Cici's Pizza Kids' Night. Kids will offered rides in race cars at intermission and receive a coupon from Cici's Pizza. The Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks, 4- ylinders and 8-Cylinders will compete. Warm-ups start at 7 p.m.

Burkholder unexpectedly wins at The Rock

Aug. 18, 2007

CUMBERLAND, Md. – Randy Burkholder had planned to simply show up. With his arm in a cast, Burkholder came through with an unexpected victory on Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

Injured two weeks ago and hampered by a large cast on his broken left arm, a tired, but cheerful, Burkholder won the 20-lap Sunoco Limited Late Model feature. Daniel Cornman came through late in the Allegany Scrap Street Stock feature to get another win. Marcius VanMeter was the TC Race Cars Hobby Stock winner. Jimmy Moreland won on the last lap of the 8-Cylinder feature and Scott Krumanacke was declared the 4-Cylinder winner.

Burkholder led the entire way after starting on the pole of the 20-lap Sunoco Limited Late Model feature. He led by 10 car lengths early over Travis Stickley, Matt Emerick and Dave Troutman.

Three cautions in three laps shuffled the field behind Burkholder. Emerick took over second from Stickley on lap 11. Troutman tried  the outside, then spun, then recovered to get third from Stickley.

Burkholder won by 11 car lengths over Emerick, Troutman, Stickley and Travis Kennell. The win was Burkholder's fifth of the season.

Cornman claimed his eighth win by beating Mike Warrenfeltz into turn three on the inside on lap 13 of the 16-lap Allegany Scrap Street Stock feature.

Cornman, who started seventh after winning the last race, got to third behind Warrenfeltz and leader Jimmy Iser after the first lap. Warrenfeltz took the lead and Cornman followed on laps three and four.

Warrenfeltz couldn't keep Cornman behind him off of turn two with three laps to go. Cornman pulled ahead in the next corner and went on to win by three car lengths over Warrenfeltz. John Whitfield, Tony Daniels and Chris Chamberlain, the pole-sitter, completed the top five.

VanMeter won for the third time in the 15-lap TC Cars Hobby Stock feature. He was comfortably out front when Mike Moore, who started seventh, joined him in a two-car breakaway.

Moore closed in at the halfway point and made a move on VanMeter to the outside. VanMeter stuck to the bottom and protected the lead. Though Moore kept the pressure on through the final lap, VanMeter drove to victory by three car lengths.

Steve Fadley got around Mike VanMeter and Alan Shives midway through the race and finished third. Shives and Mike VanMeter were fourth and fifth.

The 4-Cylinder feature was cut short to 11 laps after a red flag for Vince Winters, who flipped in turn three. Mark Seiler was originally declared the winner, only to be disqualified in post-race inspection. Krumanacke was awarded the victory over Steve Riggleman.

Steve Yokum ended up third. Jason and Jay Imes were fourth and fifth. Five cautions kept the field bunched together and the top five shuffled with several spins over the last two laps.

Moreland won for the sixth time by getting around Kevin Brown in the final turn of the 8-Cylinder feature. Moreland drove in turn three on the high side and beat Brown off of turn four to get to the finish line with two car lengths to spare.

Moreland came back after losing the lead to Brown earlier on the final lap. A caution had set up the one-lap shootout to the finish. Brown, John Swartzwelder, Jim DeArmitt and Todd House completed the top five.

Matt Stickley won the Mechanic's 4-Cylinder race and Elwood Hyre won the Stock class Mechanics race. Christine Stickley was the 4-Cylinder Powder Puff winner.

The next race is the Dwane Shultz Memorial on Sunday, August 26. Pepsi Super Late Models, Allegany Scrap Street Stocks, TC Race Cars Hobby Stocks, 4-Cylinder Junk Cars and 8-Cylinder Junk Cars will compete. Speedway schedules incorrectly were dated  for Aug. 25.

Parks back in victory lane at The Rock

Aug. 4, 2007

CUMBERLAND, Md. – Matt Parks seemed destined for a third-place finish  but ended up with a victory after an incident on thefinal lap on Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

Parks won for the first time this season in the Sunoco Limited Late Model feature. Other winners included Dwain Rhodes (4- ylinders), who was declared the post-race winner, Mike Moore (TC Race Cars Hobby Stocks), Daniel Cornman (Allegany Scrap Street Stocks) and Jimmy Moreland (8-Cylinders).

Parks led early only to watch Randy Burkholder shoot by after lap five. Burkholder controlled the race up until a caution on lap 18. Matt Sponaugle, who had worked his way to second over Parks after the 10th lap, went to the high side on the restart to pull even with Burkholder.

Racing back under the white flag, Burkholder and Sponaugle made slight contact in turns one and two and spun out. Parks avoided the incident to recapture the lead and go on to victory over Brian Lessley by three car lengths. Matt Emerick was third, with  Sponaugle fourth and Dan Zechman fifth.

Moore held off Marcus VanMeter and Steve Fadley to get his fourth win of the season in the 15-lap Hobby Stock feature. Moore held off VanMeter at the start and again on lap nine. Fadley joined in the battle after lap six and the three diced back and forth the rest of the way.

Fadley tried to get by on a lap 10 restart, but Moore denied him the lead and VanMeter eventually took back second. Joe Railey and Shawn Wyles completed the top five.

Cornman won the 16-lap Street Stock race for the seventh time this season. After getting second by the third lap, Cornman closed in on leader John Whitfield. The final caution on lap 13 set up the winning move.

Cornman shot inside of Whitfield coming off turn two, raced him side by side down the backstretch and pulled ahead in turn three. He went on to win by five car lengths. Jimmy Iser, Randy Zechman and Rick Wright completed the top five.

Rhodes picked up his first victory in the 12-lap 4-Cylinder race after crossing the finish line fourth. Probable winner Jeff Tuel and the third-place car of Steve Riggleman were disqualified in post-race inspection.

The second-place car of Jason Imes served a two-spot penalty for a restart infraction. He still ended up second after the penalties were handed out. Bob Imes and Jay Imes finished third and fourth. Vince Winters was fifth.

Chris Wright led eight laps, trading the lead with Mark Seiler in a heated battle up front. Seiler pulled off while leading on lap 10 and Wright fell out after the subsequent restart.

Moreland became a five-time winner in the 12-lap 8-Cylinder race, working his way back from a penalty to lead the final eight laps. Moreland drove hard into turn three to get the lead away from Jim DeArmitt on lap four.

He won by three car lengths at the end over DeArmitt. John Swartzwelder was third, Jim Rubright Jr. was fourth and Todd House was fifth.

Racing resumes at The Rock in two weeks, on Saturday, Aug. 18, with Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks, 4- ylinders, 8-Cylinders and kid's bike races. A correction has been issued for the date of the Dwane Shultz Memorial Super Late Model race, which will be held on Sunday, Aug. 26. The date appeared incorrectly on race schedules.

Sponaugle leads repeat winners at The Rock

July 28, 2007

CUMBERLAND, Md. – Matt Sponaugle won the Sunoco Limited Late Model race, leading a group of drivers familiar with victory lane on Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

Sponaugle picked up his third win while Daniel Cornman (Allegany Scrap Street Stocks) won his sixth, Steve Fadley (TC Race Cars Hobby Stocks) won his fifth, Jeff Tuel (4-Cylinders) won his second and Jimmy Moreland (8-Cylinders) won his fourth.

Sponaugle led all 20 laps, holding back Randy Burkholder in the latter half of the race, to get the win. Burkholder, last week's winner and current point leader, caught up to Sponaugle through the halfway point.

Running the high line, Sponaugle briefly gave room to Burkholder on the bottom coming off of turn four on lap 13. Sponaugle pulled away, however, and led Burkholder to the finish line by three car lengths. D.J. Troutman, Michael Collins and Travis Stickley  completed the top five.

Cornman stuck to his line and stayed ahead of Mike Warrenfeltz to take the checkered flag in the 16-lap Allegany Scrap Street Stock feature. Cornman, the division's point leader, moved up to the pole after a multi-car accident in turn two after the start sent polesitter Don Zechman and Rick Wright to the pit area.

Cornman went on to lead every lap with Warrenfeltz right on his bumper for most of the race. Cornman found a little breathing room by lap 11 until three cautions came in the next two laps. Warrenfeltz couldn't find room to get alongside and trailed Cornman to the finish by two car lengths. John Whitfield, Randy Zechman and Jimmy Iser completed the top five.

Fadley prevailed in the closest race of the night by holding off a late charge by Marcus VanMeter in the 15-lap TC Race Cars Hobby Stock feature. Fadley jumped around Mike Moore to get the lead at the outset while VanMeter, who started last, took the  first 10 laps to get into contention.

VanMeter closed the gap on Fadley and a caution on lap 13 bunched the field up to the finish. VanMeter tried the high side but Fadley held his ground to the finish line. Mike Moore, Joe Railey and David Puckett finished third through fifth.

Tuel won the 12-lap 4-Cylinder Junk Car race by getting out front after the first lap over Mark Seiler. Tuel steadily pulled away as the race wound down to the closing laps.

He won by half of a straightaway over Seiler and point-leader Jason Imes. Chris Wright and Dave Comer finished fourth and fifth.

Jimmy Moreland held off Paul Gambol in the early running of the 12-lap 8-Cylinder Junk Car race and went on to victory by six car lengths.

Gambol raced Moreland side by side for lead from the drop of the green and continued after a caution on lap one. Moreland, the current point leader, stuck to his line and Gambol couldn't make another run before the finish. Jim DeArmitt, John Swartzwelder and Todd House completed the top five.

Racing continues at The Rock this Saturday, Aug. 4, with Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks, 4-Cylinders, 8- ylinders, a Mechanic's race and Powder Puff. In other speedway news, a correction has been issued for the date of the Dwane Shultz Memorial Super Late Model race, which will be held on Sunday, Aug. 26. The date appeared incorrectly on race schedules. The Holiday Inn of Cumberland has also joined as a sponsor for the rest of the season. For more information,

Pencil wins Fair race at The Rock

July 22, 2007

CUMBERLAND, Md. – Jack Pencil came on strong in the last half of the Pepsi Super Late Model feature to win on Sunday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

The annual Allegany County Fair races lived up to its tradition of providing stellar fields for six divisions totaling 111 cars. Marcus VanMeter took the victory in the night's other big event, the 20-lap Randy Simpson Memorial for the TC Race Cars Hobby Stocks. Other winners were Randy Burkholder, John Whitfield, John Swartzwelder and Chris Booher.

The win was the fourth of the season for Pencil, who started back in seventh for the 25-lap race. Pencil worked his way to fifth through lap seven, and then made a bold move on the outside to pass three cars in one lap after a restart on lap10.

While pole-sitter Wayne Johnson was in command of the lead, Pencil took positions from Keith Barbara and Chuck Clise in a three- ide sprint down the backstretch. In the fourth turn, he got second from  Greg Fetters.

At the halfway point, Pencil caught up with Johnson on the outside in turn two, battled side by side around the turns and took the lead in turn two on the next lap. The race stayed under green the rest of the way and Pencil took the checkered flag by a straightaway over Scott Rhodes.

Rhodes had started 13th and worked his way to second over Johnson on lap 15. Johnson and Clise finished third and fourth. Brent Smith completed the top five after starting 16th.

After getting out front on the second lap after the first caution, VanMeter held onto the lead through six more cautions to win the $500 prize in the inaugural Randy Simpson Memorial. The win was the second of the season for VanMeter.

Steve Fadley set the pace on the first lap but gave way to VanMeter and could never make another run at the top spot. Chuck Weyant was in contention throughout the race but lost third to Mike VanMeter on lap 17. Weyant and  Mike Moore completed the top five.

Burkholder held off Tim Smith Jr. and D.J. Troutman in the early laps to get his fourth win this season in the 20-lap Sunoco Limited Late Model feature. Burkholder started on the pole and battled Smith in the first lap.

After a restart on the second lap, Troutman took over the lead only to lose it as another yellow came out just before a lap was completed. Burkholder retained the lead and left no room on the next restart.

Burkholder went on to win by half of a straightaway over Troutman. Smith was third, followed by 11th-place starter Mike Altobelli Jr. and Matt Sponaugle.

Whitfield won the 16-lap Allegany Scrap Street Stock race for the third time this season. He led every lap, though Daniel Cornman and Mike Stiffler never fell far behind. Whitfield won over Cornman by three car lengths.

Cornman's best chance came on a restart at lap 12 after he got second from Stiffler. He pulled to the inside but Whitfield had the momentum exiting the corner and stayed ahead.

After Stiffler in third, Mike Warrenfeltz finished fourth, up from his 14th starting spot, and Rick Wright was fifth.

Booher survived seven laps in a crash-filled 4-Cylinder feature that was cut short by a red flag on lap five.

The calamity started early when pole-sitter Eric Broadwater and several other cars got together under caution before the first lap
could be completed. Broadwater was unable to continue and Jeff Tuel briefly took the lead before being bumped by Booher in turn two and  nearly spinning.

Booher's night nearly ended on lap three when a pack of cars chasing him banged off of each other, turning Booher sideways in turn one. He corrected the car soon enough to retain the lead when another car hit the wall behind the lead cars.

Just as the field seemed to get sorted out, the fourth-place car of Ray Shepherd turned over and rolled several times in turn two. The red flag came out to clean up and the race concluded two laps later with Booher getting his first win over Dwain Rhodes, Jason Imes, Josh VanMeter and Bob Imes.

Swartzwelder, befittingly, concluded the night after a caution-filled 8-Cylinder race which saw the two lead cars break down. The win was the first for Swartzwelder.

Jimmy Moreland led the first two laps before losing the handle in turn three. Kevin Brown seemed to be cruising after getting the lead until his car dropped out on lap seven.

Swartzwelder took advantage and won by a half of a straightaway over Harmon Crites, Jim DeArmitt, Jim Rubright Jr., and Alan Lowery.

Racing continues at The Rock this Saturday, July 28, with Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks, 4-Cylinders, 8- ylinders and a Mechanic's race. For more information, visit the speedway's Web site at www.therockspeedway.com.

Sponaugle, Cornman, Moore, Imes and Brown repeat winners at The Rock

July 7, 2007

CUMBERLAND, Md. – Matt Sponaugle, Daniel Cornman, Mike Moore, Jason Imes and Kevin Brown were repeat winners on Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

Sponaugle won his second straight in the 20-lap Sunoco Limited Late Model feature. Sponaugle took over the lead as Dan Zechman slowed in the first few laps. Sponaugle pulled away from Travis Stickley to win by a straightaway.

Randy Burkholder lost a lap changing a tire at the start but battled Sponaugle to the finish to make up the lap for a third-place finish. Scott Daniels and Zechman completed the top five.

Cornman kept ahead of John Whitfield to win for the fifth time this season in the Allegany Scrap Street Stock 16-lap feature. Cornman took the lead from Jimmy Iser after lap one. Whitfield got second when Iser slowed on the following lap to bring out the first caution.

From that point, Cornman was in control, though Whitfield never fell back by more than four car lengths through the finish. Randy Zechman and Don Zechman overcame an accident on lap five to finish third and fourth. Buddy Jones finished fifth.

Moore won for the third time in four races by holding off Steve Fadley to the finish of the 15-lap TC Race Cars Hobby Stock feature. Moore's car picked up a miss in the engine after the final restart on lap 13. Fadley took advantage to pull even with him when the race resumed.

Moore stayed on the bottom of the track and held off Fadley's challenge on the backstretch. He won by little more than half of a car  length at the finish.

The race had five cautions, including one for Marcus VanMeter, who had led the opening lap before giving way to Moore. Jacob Hinton finished third. Mike VanMeter and Eric Weyant completed the top five.  Jason Imes topped the 4-Cylinder field for the ninth time in 11 races by getting around Bob Imes on the outside on the second lap. Jason eventually pulled away after a pair of cautions through lap five. He won by 12 car lengths.

After making a good move on the outside to get the lead at the start, Bob Imes' runner-up finish was his best this season. Dwain Rhodes ended up third after passing Ray Shepherd in the first several laps. Shepherd and Jay Imes, who started 12th, completed the top five.

Brown controlled the pace all the way in the 12-lap 8-Cylinder feature. The win was Brown's fourth to lead the division. He held off a move by Paul Gambol on lap seven and managed to win by just over a car length at the finish.

Gambol and Jimmy Moreland chased Brown over the final four laps. Moreland emerged from a four-car battle for third, fourth and fifth. He was  third followed by Harmon Crites and Chad Gambol.

The Rock will not race next week during preparation for the Allegany County Fair. The annual Allegany County Fair race will be held on Sunday, July 22. Gates open at 2 p.m. and racing starts at 7 p.m. General admission is $11 to the fairgrounds and rides will be open prior to the races. Pit admission is extra.

The Pepsi Super Late Models, Sunoco Limited Late Models, TC Race Cars Hobby Stocks, Allegany Scrap Street Stocks, 4-Cylinder Junk Cars and 8-Cylinder Junk Cars will be in action. The Hobby Stocks will compete for $500 to win in the 20-lap Randy Simpson Memorial race.
