Paules, Frees and Truex Grab Mother’s Day Gold at Mountain Speedway
By: Gene Ostrowski
St. Johns, PA- With mothers receiving free admission to the speedway Sunday,
plenty of drivers took part in the Mother’s Day Special at Mountain Speedway.
Earl Paules held off Shaun Carrig to score the sport modified victory and Ron
Frees extended his point lead after winning his second straight super stock main
event. Ryan Truex outlasted the field and notched the win in the legend feature.
Brian Braddock scored the micro stock verdict and Tyler Truex scored his very
first asphalt bandolarro main event win.
After running heat races in the afternoon, the top six drivers in the sport
modified division redrew for starting spots to start the 40-lap main event.
Rick Zacharias and Shaun Carrig shared the front row and when the green flag
flew, Zacharias shot into the early lead. Earl Paules started third and quickly
moved into second by lap two.
Paules finally found the opening he was looking for when Zacharias slid up the
race track in turn one. He grabbed the lead as Carrig closed in on Zacharias for
second.
With fifteen laps in the books, John Wilbur grabbed third from Carrig and began
to reel in the second place car, but only a few laps later Wilbur ran up high
off of turn two, which allowed Carrig to retake the position.
The top two remained the same over the course of the event, with Carrig and
Wilbur swapping the third position from time-to-time.
The final caution flag waved with four laps remaining when Tom Kearns spun in
turns one and two. Wilbur was slow getting up to speed on the restart and lost
the fourth spot to Jason Hearne.
Paules held off Carrig over the remaining laps and went on to score his first
sport modified win of the season. Carrig crossed the stripe in second, followed
by Zacharias, Hearne and Kevin Davison.
Earl Paules, Shaun Carrig and Scott Riggleman were heat race winners.
After a six car redraw for starting positions, the super stocks hit the speedway
for their 25-lap feature. Gregg Miranda led the field down to the drop of the
green, but lost the top spot to Ron Frees after one circuit.
Frank Reakes took command of the event only three laps later, but the two were
sent to the rear on lap eleven after Frees made contact and spun Reakes off of
turn two.
Miranda inherited the lead for the restart and held the top spot with Nick
Gargiulo in second.
The two tangled on lap thirteen, and again, the third place car inherited the
lead. This time is was Paul Thomas. Thomas led until lap twenty-three, when he
spun after being overtaken by Frees and Reakes.
Reakes attempted to get by Frees over the remaining laps, but had to settle for
second. Jerry Stanzione, Rick Koph and Bill Vanderveen completed the top five.
Ron Frees and Gregg Miranda were heat race winners.
The top six legend qualifiers redrew for starting spots with Ryan Truex starting
on the pole. Truex immediately jumped out front in the 15-lap feature, which was
cut short for 20-laps because of time.
By halfway, Truex led over Roger Coss, Derek Hopkins, Mike Alcaro and Scott
Hubler.
Many caution periods plagued the event with the last coming on lap thirteen,
when Malcolm Campbell spun in turn two. Casey Robicheau and Bobby Baltera were
also collected.
Truex had no trouble en route to the win over Coss, Hopkins, Alcaro and Karl
Heisler, but the worst wreck happened after the checkered flag.
Several cars were out of shape at the finish and with nowhere to go, Katrine
Lotti’s car launched into the air down towards turn one. The car barrel rolled
once in mid air before slamming the turn one fence.
The red flag was displayed and miraculously, Lotti climbed from the car under
her own power.
Heat race wins went to Roger Coss, Michael Stull and Ryan Truex.
Ten micro stocks took the green flag for a 15-lap feature race. Brian Braddock
led all of the laps, but it didn’t come easy, as he held off a hard charging
Denny Hiddemen and former Mountain feature winner, Tom Ervin, to victory. Nick
Cottone and Jim Van Dine completed the top five.
Tyler Truex held off Robert Vassilatos to take his very first bandolarro win on
asphalt in the 15-lap feature.

The Iceman Adds the Linda's Lapsaloosa 30 to His Win List
2007 Linda's Speedway Champion Marc Daniels took the ride in the S&S rental for
the night and it paid off for Marc as he convincingly took the top spot and was
never denied from there .With Jan Acker who has shown he can get the job done
and be a force in 2008 leading the field to the green in his # 20 ,it was no
easy chore as the 2007 Slinsghot by Tobias National Champion Billy VanInwegen,
Jr was his front row partner. The green waved and Billy mashed the gas into turn
1 and grabbed the top spot. Jan was relentless and answered the call reclaiming
the spot he had earned from qualifying by passing Billy heading off of turn 2.
Action aplenty was trailing right behind them as Mike Glass, Jim Housworth, Bill
Weaver and Brandon Bucher all tried their best to pick up some spots early in
the 30 lapper. Not really entering the spotlight right away was Marc Daniels in
the driver's seat of the 5S for Ryan Smith who could not make the call due to
some extensive oral surgery. Marc was slowly picking off cars 1 by 1 and it took
2 restarts for Marc to become a solid factor in the race to the front. He passed
Glass, Billy V and had Acker to deal with for the win.The pair raced for 4 laps
before Daniels found the bottom to his liking in turn 4 and was never to be
denied after that .Paul Lotier, Jr., Nate Christman and Ryan Wells were keeping
up with the top 5 but Lotier suffered mechanical problems and Simon Egan enters
the picture in the 551 and becomes a member of the top 5.With the laps winding
down it was a battle to the end as a few drivers had an outside chance to pick
up a few spots. With the white flag waving Kaitie McCardle found back luck in
the cockpit and limped slowly on the outside. With the field bearing down on her
it could be a factor and was as Wells and Christman mixed it up with Christman
collecting McCardle at the line and fell back to 8th as he limped his car to the
finish line. Daniels headed to the scale and then to victory lane with Jan Acker
and Billy ,Jr. heading there to join him. The top 5 were Marc Daniels, Jan
Acker, Billy VanInwegen, Jr. ,Simon Egan and Ryan Wells. This gives Marc the
early point lead in the Mid-Atlantic Gold Region. A fine field of 28 cars
entered with all cars starting the A Main.

DiMarco, Ross, Biegley, Sicconi and Tidaback Share Mountain Spotlight
By: Gene Ostrowski
St. Johns, PA- Mountain Speedway held its first Saturday night racing program of
the season last weekend, where several drivers visited victory for the first
time this season. Richie DiMarco grabbed top honors in street stock competition,
as did first time winner, Nick Ross in the thrillers. Jeff Biegley scored his
first career win in an exciting 4 cyl. FWD division triumph. “Liquid” Lou
Sicconi and Mike Tidaback scored the feature wins in the dual ATQMRA main
events.
The afternoon began with ATQMRA midget qualifying, which was held “Formula One
style”. Tim Behmer ran the fastest lap with a time of 12.759 seconds and Lou
Sicconi was second quickest with a 12.774. Almost half of the field was inverted
for the start of the 20-lap feature, which put Jeff Kot on the pole position.
Kot led to the drop of the green, but outside pole sitter, Robin Johnston, made
a pass for the lead before a lap was scored. After three laps of racing, Tim
Behmer was second, followed by “Liquid” Lou Sicconi, Frank Fischer and Chris
Deritis.
Slowly but surely, Matt Janish moved through the field from his eight starting
spot. Also moving through the field was Ryan Tidman, who found himself in third,
twelve laps into the contest.
Trouble struck Tidman on the following lap, when he lost an engine in turns two.
The track crew quickly rushed to the scene and extinguished the flames, but
Tidman’s hopes of victory were diminished.
After the restart, Sicconi shot by Johnston for the top spot and Janish followed
into second. Sicconi never looked back and cruised on to victory over Janish,
Johnston, Fischer and Tidaback.
After winning the street stock heat race earlier in the evening, Richie DiMarco
started on the front row, next to pole sitter, Brad Kline.
Kline leapt to the early lead and DiMarco tucked back in the second spot. Paul
Frantz grabbed third by the second lap with Steve Shultz and Elliot Wohl
rounding out the top five.
A lap six opportunity arose for DiMarco and he worked the high side around Kline
and into the lead. Frantz tried the same move but failed on his first attempt.
DiMarco continued out front when the caution flew on lap twelve, when Shultz
tried to get underneath of Frantz for third in turns one and two.
DiMarco turned up the heat after the restart and began to put some distance
between himself and second place. Frantz finally cleared Kline for second on lap
fifteen, with Wohl running fourth. Jennifer Kutz entered the top five.
Eventually Wohl caught and passed Kline for fourth and Shultz took the fifth
spot from Kutz, but no one was able to touch DiMarco, as he notched his first
win of the season over Frantz and Wohl.
Bill Price, Jr. started on the outside of pole sitter, Nick Ross, after winning
the thriller heat race earlier in the day.
Ross got a great start when the green flag dropped for the start of the 20-lap
feature event and Mike Moyer, Jr. quickly grabbed second from Price.
Ross remained out front and after five laps of competition, was trailed by
Moyer, Jr, Price, Mike Moyer, Sr. and Nick Shaw.
Division points leader, Scott Adams, started fifth on the grid and moved into
the fourth spot with seven laps in the books. He attempted to take third from
Price in turn two as well, but was nearly run down to the infield.
With Ross sill out front, Moyer, Jr. moved to second. Eventually, Adams cleared
Price and Shaw to take the third spot.
After several disappointing weeks, Ross finally hit victory lane for his very
first career win, ahead of Moyer, Jr, Adams, Price and Shaw.
Bill Verwys, Sr. led the 4 cyl. FWD division to the drop of the green flag from
the pole position. Before a single lap was score, second place starter, Jeff
Biegley grabbed the top spot.
Verwys tucked into second and with five laps in the books, Eric Banashefski ran
third, followed by Jake Oswald and Nikki Wachs.
Biegley wasn’t running away with the show by any means and the rest of the field
proved throughout the event. Wachs and Oswald ran side-by side for fourth, then
with Verwys for third. However, all of the drivers, including Banashefski in
second place, began to reel in Biegley for a five-car battle.
Things got even more interesting, and involved a three-wide battle between
Biegley, Wachs and Verwys over the remaining three laps.
Biegley held on to score his first career win. Wachs finished in the runner-up
spot, followed by Verwys, Oswald and Banashefski completed the top five after
winning the heat race earlier.
The ATQMRA midgets took the stage for their second main event of the evening
with Tim Behmer leading the field to the drop of the green flag.
Immediately after the start, Robin Johnston shot out front and appeared to have
the victory wrapped up early, but things changed after he jumped two restarts
following several cautions. On the final lap four restart, Johnston was sent to
the rear of the field, which handed the lead to Chris Deritis.
Deritis led one circuit after the restart before being overtaken by Mike
Tidaback as the two raced out of turn two. Unfortunately for Deritis, the
contact forced him to spin and brought out the caution. He rejoined the tail end
of the field for the restart.
Tidaback led the remaining laps and grabbed his first Mountain ATQMRA win of the
season over Matt Janish and Robin Johnston, who had worked his way back towards
the front. Dave Williams finished fourth and Frank Fischer rounded out the top
five.
The Doylestown Quarter Midget Racing Club was on hand for to help promote their
racing efforts and several of the young competitors ran a handful of laps during
intermission. The youngsters also gave the command for the start of the first
ATQMRA feature event.

Sunny Skies, Warm Weather to Greet Racers at Snydersville Raceway
Although a late storm halted Snydersville’s racing action last Friday with 5
races left, the early evening action was hot and heavy in the Kart, Slingshot
and Microstock divisions. This week the Monroe County oval will pick up where
they left off with the remainder of the Brigg’s Sr. Stock feature that was being
run when the rains came. The remaining 4 features consisting of Senior
Slingshots, Open Modified Karts, Brigg’s Animal Heavy and Sr. Sportsman will not
be run and double points will be awarded to all qualified cars off of their heat
race performances.
It appears Mother Nature may be a bit kinder this week as we have a forecast of
Sunny & Clear Skies, with temperatures in the Upper 70’s. Great Weather always
brings lots of competitors to Snydersville and this Friday should be no
exception.
A full regular show will be run for all divisions and will feature a 25 lap main
event for the popular Junior Slingshot Cars. Will last weeks winner Molly
Chambers return looking for win #2 or will a new face emerge from the Jr.
Division? A few invaders are expected to challenge the Snydersville regulars for
the top prize.
The Raceway’s surface has been lightning quick and in great condition. The
fields are growing bigger each week and it appears Snydersville Raceway is the
Friday “Place to Race” this year.
Gates open at 4PM. with the weekly driver’s meeting at 6:45PM. The evening’s
first green flag will drop precisely at 7PM.
April 25 will be a banner night at Snydersville as it will be Rodota Trucking
and Excavating Night at the Raceway. Located in Belvidere, NJ , Rodota is
operated by Former Modified Driver and Snydersville competitor Bob Hummer.
Rodota also sponsors Hummers 4 car team consisting of Bob, his son Chris, Dan
Miller and Harold Fisher. This special evening will feature the Kid Kart
Division as their features have been extended to 25 laps.
