Mid-Atlantic Championship Crowns Jason Covert for the Third Time in as Many Years

Indiana, PA (March 7, 2009) The Mid-Atlantic Championship Series had their final curtain call of 2008 season at their 12th Annual Awards ceremony where they presented over $73,000 in cash and prizes. The Geesey Brothers crowned Jason Covert, York Haven, PA, Champion for the third consecutive year. In capturing the title Covert battled an average of 45 drivers per event. His effort was no small task given the quantity and quality of his completion. He faced his highest car count at Portsmouth Raceway Park over the July 4th weekend at 56 with the lowest being 39. Mid-Atlantic Championship Announces the First Marquee Event of the Season

Indiana, PA (January 30, 2009) The Mid-Atlantic Championship Series is pleased to announce the first major marquee event for the 2009 season, on Saturday, August 8, at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway, Jamaica, VA, for the 30th Annual Ernie Shelton Topless USA 100®. This event will once again be presented in the fan popular twin-25 lap qualifying format with $1,000 going to the winner of each of those events with the final 50 lapper paying $10,000 to-win.

In 2008 the event went “topless” for the first time and was an overwhelming success with Chris “Smokey” Madden, Grey Court, SC, smoking the field of 46 cars from nine states. Clarke Sawyer added, “This type of event provides fans with a set of 25-lap qualifying races that have the potential of starting a robust field of 26-cars in each of those races as well as a 50-lap finale that could start a blockbuster 28 drivers.

Bill Sawyer, commented, “Jeff, Andy and Matt, like our family, have been involved in racing a long time and with that, understand what it takes to build an event and not just another race. We are well on our way with the program to building an event of notable proportion. Since bringing Ernie Shelton’s USA 100® to Virginia Motor Speedway we have had a defined mission, and we are making strides to meet our goals for this event.”, concluded Sawyer.

Andy Geesey, Series President added, “We really enjoy going to one of the “Crown Jewel” facilities in the country for such a prestigious event. Ernie Shelton’s tradition now has a home at one of the finest dirt tracks in the country and we are certainly proud to be an integral part of that show. The purse is just $60,000 for this one-day show, ranking it near the top prizes offerings for a one-day show in the country”, concluded Geesey.
