Almost Time To Strap In!

February 28, 2008

Delmar, DE….. It’s not quite in the air yet, for Delaware?  You best believe it is on the mind of an abundant to an infinite amount of people though.  It’s Loud?  Has a sensational aroma of tires, new exhaust, fresh paint, schemes, fuel fumes, and the purring sound of horses revving in the air.  If you haven’t guess it yet, you need to sit down and strap in and try it.  What am I talking about?  Simply, stock car racing, karting, or even a ¼ mile dragway, to include all the demands from fans that need to be met.

Race fans all across the nation are ready to rumble.  The mighty addiction of “NEED FOR SPEED” that craves to be fed anytime it can has been flowing in Florida all month; better known as the Winternationals and kick off NASCAR season.  Streaming from all the way to the dirt ovals of East Bay, Golden Illes, and Volusia Speedway to the asphalt Daytona track for Sprint Cup, Nationwide, and Craftsman Truck Series.

Racing has changed much over the years; more sophisticated, technical, cost are just a few of the options. To be involved in this sport it takes a lot.  A few things that support this sport is time, drivers, sponsors, crews, fans, not to mention the mighty dollar, but most of all a place to feed this “NEED FOR SPEED”, your home track.

To have as much various types of racing, and close to home it is an extra big bonus?  The Delaware Motorsports Complex, Delmar, DE, is such a place to offer three various types of racing to feed your hunger.  At the grounds you will find a ½ mile clay oval (Delaware International Speedway) with Saturday night action, ¼ mile drag strip runs Sundays at the start of the season, and dirt kart racing (U S 13 Kart Club Track) with Friday night events.  The complex is located on U.S. 13 Highway, just a half- mile north of the Delaware-Maryland state line, only 50 minutes from Dover International Speedway and 30 minutes from the beaches.

Everyone knows NASCAR has become a big marketing commodity with tons of exposure to draw in new fans.  Well, the old faithful fans and teams have been fans for a very long time.  So many people are just getting brought into a world of what we already know is amazingly HOT!  Through years of the blood, sweat, tears, and years of racing into how it has evolved into today’s world is worthiness new fans can’t feel.  Not that it is better, but I think it gives an edge on newer fans.  Just a personal note, you need that backbone to really feel and know you are a true fan sort to speak; not complaining, just feel we are special.

Either way, racing has grown immensely, and that needs to support at your home tracks as well.  The season is just around the corner, grab a friend that has not been racing and take then to your track; let them see what they are missing.  The entire experience is indescribable to put in words.  You have to feel it!  That’s just the way it is?  The whole point is racing will be here soon.  By just not being a fan any longer I wasn’t really ready to get started in a way.  But when NASCAR hyped the Speedweeks and plugged it with a 100 hrs of viewing, it soon had my adrenaline ready to get racing.  In NASCAR, Jr. won one of the shoot out races and brought very emotional feelings for many of us.  Everyone is hoping he will find himself with his new venture teaming up with Hendricks Motorsports.  I couldn’t wait for the official first NASCAR race the following weekend after that.

How do I become a fan?  The thing is, we are so fortunate to have the options to choose what type of racing or what kind of tracks we like.  To have these options so close is just icing on the cake.  Delaware offers some really great tracks.  Take the time to take the family, or bring new fans to tracks, make it a regular thing.  It is a family sport, racing for all kinds of ages.  Do you know how lucky we are? Lucky!  Support your local track and start the season off right.  Feel the force!

The Delaware Motorsports Complex is set to start test & tune this weekend, Sunday, March 2, 2008, 12 PM – 5 PM for the dragway; only if weather is permitting.  The first club race for the US 13 Kart Club Track will be Friday, March 28.  Test & tune for the speedway is Saturday, April 5, 8-9 PM.  Opening night is the following week.  Any questions on events or ticket sales, rules check the tracks web at www.delawareracing.com or call the office at 302-875-1911 or the tracks hot line at 302-846-3968.
