Georgetown Speedway Celebrates Melvin L. Joseph Memorial Night September 22
By Bonnie Nibblett
Georgetown, DE…..Georgetown Speedway may have opened a little late in the season with the grand opening near the end of May of 2006, plus the fact the track had also been closed for nine years or since 1997. The racing on the fasted half-mile oval track in Delaware ranks every bit as first rate since opening night. Last week, “Run What You Brung” night had the Super Late Models lapping in .15 seconds, now that’s fast.
I’m not saying everything has been perfect for everyone at times, but to get a track in the shape as promoter Lou Johnson and the restoration committee have done so, in such a short time, proves miracles can happen. To hear sounds of engines rumbling on that circle was given up by many race fans. You always hoped that some how, some way, the possibility of that dream, actually could happen was pretty aloof. But it did come true for us this year, so miracles can happen so lets enjoy it.
A tentative rush scheduled was made, clay added to the track, PA System up and running, vendors contacted, lining up workers, getting lights up, are just a FEW of things that had to be done to get this year running, let alone getting all the legalities straight just to open. No points were given to teams this year, nor AMB transponding system required. Yet, the track has been kicking some serious butt so far this year. What all can we expect for the 2007 year? I bet it will be exciting, just can’t wait.
Still there’s plenty of good racing left, before this season will end. Friday nights in the next coming weeks with fan specials, sponsors, appearances of drivers, give-a-ways, you don’t want to miss out. Every night since Georgetown opened this year has had the stands filled with fans that have supported this effort to get the track going. Sponsorship with the communities support has been successful.
Some headliner drivers such as Billy Pauch, Kenny Brightbill, Ryan Godown, Donny Radd, Wade Hendrickson, Gary Hager, and Jimmy Chester have ridden the oval in modifieds. Late models have seen Scott Haus, Anthony Rushing, Scott Cross, and Darryl Hills, and Rob Schirmer to try to go against the locals. With such drivers as Beau Wilkins, Norman Short, Jr., Tim Millman, Jamie Mills, and Glen Reed all running in mods. Richard Jarvis, Jr., Ricky Elliott, Ray Davis, Jr., Kenny Pettyjohn, Dale Lingo IV, and David Pettyjohn to name a few of late drivers. Look for invaders each week that go up against the Delaware drivers; really some fast, awesome racing.
Coming September, 22, 2006, will be the first Annual Melvin L. Joseph Memorial Race. Melvin Joseph founded the Georgetown Speedway in 1949. Racing was quite a bit different than today. Nonetheless, it would become a landmark, a place in Delaware that pulled racers from all over the east coast to play in the clay. Melvin contributed to the racing industry in so many ways for years. Melvin worked much with the operation of Dover International Speedway to the distinct of what it has become today, during his life, too.
To honor Joseph, the track plans to host the Super Late Models, both crate classes, Modified and Late Model, along with Delmar Vintage Racing Club. Melvin drove the famous number forty-nine. So the winnings will be as follows. The Super Lates will have a $4900 purse that night along with running a forty-nine lap feature, both TSS Mods & TSS Late Models crate motors being awarded $749 for the checkered and additional goodies along with the larger purses. Melvin L. Joseph changed the racing world forever.
The Delmar Vintage Club is holding an open competition to honor Joseph in attempt to “Keep The Old Alive”. Sportsmans and Modifieds will be running that night as well. Anyone with a Vintage car that might want to join the action can contact Sonny Ritter at 302-684-8089, or Jerry Carr at 302-846-9601 for more details.
This coming week, September 15, GT will have the Big Block Modifieds, with bonus money for the top 3 small blocks, along with the two crate divisions on hand to round the track. Admission prices for general admission did increase to $12 from $10 a couple of weeks ago, pit admission is still $25, 12 and under free. Gates open 5 PM, drivers meeting 6:30 PM, warm-ups 7 PM. Track hot line 302-856-7415; fax 302-856-7416.
On October 14th & 15th, a huge two day event with Big block Modifieds, Super Late Models, Small Block Modifieds, TSS Crate Late Models, TSS Crate Modifieds, and Little Lincoln Vintage Club for a “Blast From The Past.” More information will follow on purses and such.
